Examples: watching an Olympic athlete and working hard in sports to become like that athlete.

Study hard at achieving a high grades and to make a top achiever in school.
Types of motivation in education

Intrinsic motivation- Is a driven by a personal interest or enjoyment and not driven by society. It occurs
when students are engaged because of internal rewards, like a love of learning or interest in a subject.
When students are internally motivated to learn.

Examples: an example of intrinsic motivation is a student learning new vocabulary words because they
love to read.

Participating in a sport in school because it’s fun and enjoy it rather than doing it to win an award.

Extrinsic motivation- students may be motivated to learn to pass a test, to gain a reward, or to avoid a
punishment. When students are motivated by outside factors.

Examples: an example of extrinsic motivation is a student who is studying so their parents will not
ground them for poor grades.

To gain a reward, to win a competition.

Assessment strategies that can increase motivation

1. Make clearly your learner’s objective every time-it is good if students are clarified on the
objectives they are working on and the criteria that will be used in evaluating their earning.
2. Make your students own the lesson objective- allow them to set their own personal learning
target based on the lesson objective.
3. Engage your students in self- assessment- they have established their own target against clearly
set lesson objectives.
4. Have a “growth mindset”- believe that your students can improve. Failure or wrong answer is
welcome.
5. Your assessment practice must be sensitive and constructive because assessment has an
emotional impact.
