Project Network Diagram
Project Network Diagram
The project network diagram displays the duration of activities in the project, their chronological order and
logical dependencies between the activities graphically or in tabular form.
Unlike the work breakdown structure (WBS), a network diagram also takes into account the chronological
order of activities according to their dependencies, and not just the logical order of the project activities. Bar
charts such as Gantt Charts are a special form of the network diagram.
Main functions of a network diagram are:
Forward pass is a technique to move forward through network diagram in determining the project duration
and finding the critical path or Free Float of the project. It is used to find the EET of each event, EETS =
EETp + duration. Whereas backward pass represents moving backward from the end result to calculate late
start or to find if there is any slack in the activity. It is used to find the LET of each event, LETp = LETs -
duration.

Exercises
1. You are required to prepare a network diagram for the following project and determine the project
duration and the critical path. If the owner of the project gives a deadline of 14 months, is it possible to meet
it?
2. You are required to prepare a network diagram for the following project and determine the project
duration and the critical path. Also, do an analysis of the different types of resources being used by using a
Gantt chart.
Activity Predecessor (s) Duration (weeks) Number of Staff Cost / week (Sh.)
A - 3 5 100
B A 3 3 200
C A 2 4 100
D B 2 6 300
E B 2 2 200
F C, D 1 3 100
G F 3 5 200
3. You are required to prepare a network diagram for constructing a 5 floor apartment and also determine the
earliest and latest activity times for each activity and the critical path.
4. A National Conference is planned in a University. The activities are listed down along with their
precedessors and time taken. Prepare a network diagram and determine the critical activities and how long
the project will take to complete.
Critical path: A, D, F, H, I, J, K
Project duration: 28 days
