Poultry – refers to the species of domesticated

birds that are raised to satisfy certain human

needs, particularly food Poultry species are
fast multipliers
Quick growers
Relatively more efficient converter of feeds
Chicken is the most popular
Duck is the 2nd most popular
Quail is the 3rd most popular
DEVELOPMENT AND PROSPECTS
Introduction of improved foreign breeds/strains
since the 60’s
Tremendous developments in the last 2 decades
Continuous rising demands for poultry meat and
eggs
From backyard raising to commercial raising
Integrated Farming System
GLOBAL POULTRY TRENDS
Poultry sector, which has a market value of $310.7 billion in
2020
Expected to grow to $322.5 billion in 2021
Covid 19 Impact and Recovery to 2030
The market is expected to hit $422.97 billion in 2025 with a
compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7%.
Current Problems of the Poultry Industry in the Philippines
High cost of production in relation to selling price
High cost and unstable supply (availability) of good
quality inputs.
Marketing system – inefficiency of market system
– lack of market information
– unstable prices
– poor grading standard for egg
Disease - especially for native chicken, ducks, etc..
As of 30 September 2023, the total chicken inventory reached 202.82 million birds. This was 1.1 percent
higher than the previous year’s same period count of 200.64 million birds. Population of
native/improved chicken improved by 5.0 percent. Meanwhile, broiler chicken and layer chicken stocks
reported reductions of 2.0 percent and 1.0 percent, respectively.

Of the total chicken inventory,

native/improved chicken accounted for 43.0
percent, followed by broiler chicken
with 34.7 percent share, and layer chicken with
22.3 percent share. (Figure 3)

The highest chicken inventory was noted in Central Luzon with 35.80 million birds. This was followed
by CALABARZON with 27.30 million birds and Northern Mindanao with 26.74 million birds. These
regions accounted for 44.3 percent share to the country's total chicken inventory during the period.

The highest inventory of native/improved chicken was recorded in Western Visayas with
12.71 million birds. Central Luzon reported the highest inventory of broiler chicken with
20.29 milion birds, while CALABARZON had the highest layer chicken stocks with 16.29 milion birds.

SPECIALIZED FIELDS IN POULTRY PRODUCTION BREEDING FARM OPERATIONS
A poultry breeding farm in the real essence of the field is the system of
researching or discovering the best combination of genes of parent
stocks that will be the source of commercial chicks for the poultry
producer.
A poultry geneticist maybe working on a kind of parental combinations
of the production of an egg type cross or he might be concentrating his
efforts on the discovery of a good broiler type chicken strain.
A poultry breeding farm where the geneticists are concerned of new
discoveries are long range programs. It may take about a decade before
specific genetic lines of parent stocks are release for commercial
utilization.

EGG FARMING OPERATIONS

Egg production is the older scheme of poultry production

engaged in by many research.
Formerly an egg farmer is also a breeder but recent
development in the industry makes the farmer raise
chickens just for table egg production.
Egg farming can be divided split into two phases of
operations.
~The first phase can be strictly for raising pullets. ~The
2nd phase is the keeping of layers per se when they
are on the stage of egg production.
In the present set up, there are commercial egg producers
doing both the raising of pullets and the production of eggs

BROILER FARMING OPERATIONS

Broiler farming is the most recent specialized field in the

Philippines.
This is the growing of meat – type chicken essentially for
meat production.
Stocks used for this purpose are so called broiler- type
chicks which are known for their fast growth, meaty
conformation and good feed conservation.
Broiler chicks are grown for a period of only about 5 to 6
weeks. At this age, they are marketed and slaughtered for
meat.
FEED MILLING OPERATIONS

Most poultry raisers (poultry breeder farms, eggs

farms and broiler farms) are dependent totally for
their feed supply from the feed millers. The set up
has been very successful to the point that if the feed
milling industry is halted, the entire poultry industry
will also stop.
This industry has done a very good job in the
development and achievement of the industry as a
whole.
FARM EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING

The facilities needed to the poultry operation have

come to the point of sophistication that contributes
to the economical production. Feeders, waterers,
feed mixer, crates, automatic devices to ease labor
have been contributing the better poultry
production program at present. The poultry raisers
can depend on such facilities.

Medicine, feed supplement and biological preparations

This group of inputs for poultry production is very vital to

the poultry industry
Without these segments, poultry diseases can not
be controlled and production can be uneconomical
