1. A knitting machine can produce 1,000 trousers or 3,000 shirts (or a combination of the two)
each day. The finishing department can handle either 1,500 trousers or 2,000 shirts (or a
combination of the two) each day. The marketing department requires that at least 400
trousers be produced each day. The company’s objective is profit maximization. If the profit
from a trouser is Rs 40 and that from a shirt is Rs 15, how many of each should be produced
each day? Solve graphically.
2. A health store desires to produce a capsule of natural vitamins that contains at least 12 units
of vitamin A and no less than 16 units of vitamin B. Two ingredients are available in ample
supply to produce the specified vitamin capsule. Each ingredient contains both vitamin A and
B, and the capsule can be produced by using any one ingredient or a combination of the two.
Each gm. of the ingredient one contains 3 units of vitamin A and 2 units of vitamin B. One gm
of the second ingredient, on the other hand, contains 1/2 unit of vitamin A and 1 unit of
vitamin B. What is the minimum cost of producing the capsule if the first ingredient costs 6 p
per gm and the second ingredient costs 4p per gm?
3. A media specialist plans to allocate advertising expenditure in three media where unit costs of
a message are Rs 1,500, Rs 1,250 and Rs 1,000 respectively. The total advertising budget
available for the year is Rs 50,000. The first medium is a monthly magazine, and it is desired to
advertise not more than once in one issue. At least five advertisements should appear in the
second medium and the number of advertisements in the third medium should strictly lie
between 6 and 10. The effective audience for unit advertisement in the three media is given
below:
Medium: 1 2 3
Expected effective audience: 50,000 40,000 25,000
Formulate a linear programming problem to find optimum allocation of advertisements in the
three media that would maximize the total effective audience.
4. An agriculturist has a farm with 125 acres. He produces Radish, Peas and Potatoes. Whatever
he raises is fully sold in the market. He gets Rs 5 for Radish per kg, Rs 4 for Peas per kg and Rs
5 for potatoes per kg. The average yield is 1500 kg of Radish per acre, 1800 kg of Peas per
acre, and 1200 kg of Potato per acre. To produce each 100 kg of Radish and Peas and to
produce each 80 kg of Potato, a sum of Rs 12.50 has to be used for manure. Labour required
for each acre to raise the crop is 6 man-days for Radish and Potato each and 5 man-days for
Peas. A total of 500 man-days at a rate of Rs 40 per man-day are available. Formulate this as a
linear programming problem to maximize the agriculturist's profit.
5. A Mutual Fund Company has Rs 20 lakhs available for investment in Government Bonds, blue
chip stocks, speculative stocks and short-term bank deposits. The annual expected return and
risk factors are given below:
Type of Investment Annual Expected Return Risk Factor (0 to 100)
Government Bonds 14% 12
Blue Chip Stocks 19% 24
Speculative Stocks 23% 48
Short-term Deposits 12% 6
Mutual Fund is required to keep at least Rs 2 lakhs in short-term deposits and not to exceed
an average risk factor of 42. Speculative stocks must be at most 20 percent of the total
amount invested. How should mutual fund invest the funds so as to maximize its total
expected annual return? Formulate this as a Linear Programming Problem. Do not solve it.
6. A city hospital has the following minimal requirement of nurses:
Clock Time
Period Minimal Number of Nurses Required
(24-hour Day)
1 6 am – 10 am 2
2 10 am – 2 pm 7
3 2 pm – 6 pm 15
4 6 pm – 10 pm 8
5 10 pm – 2 am 20
6 2 am – 6 am 6
Nurses report to the hospital at the beginning of each period and work for 8 consecutive
hours. The hospital wants to determine the minimum number of nurses to be employed so
that there will be sufficient number of nurses available for each period. Formulate this as a
linear programming problem by setting up appropriate constraints and objective function.
