Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in shaping an individual’s success, but academic

dishonesty, particularly cheating, poses significant challenges in maintaining academic

integrity. This study explores the effects of cheating on the academic performance of students

in Grade 10-David at Iluminada Roxas Mendoza Memorial High School. Cheating, often

driven by fear of failure, poor time management, and the desire for high grades, negatively

impacts learning outcomes and prevents an accurate assessment of students’ knowledge.

Using the Theory of Planned Behavior, the study examines both the intention to cheat and the

opportunity to do so. Data was collected through interviews, surveys, and observations to

analyze the causes, common forms, and consequences of cheating on student performance.

Findings from this research aim to raise awareness among students, teachers, and

administrators about the detrimental effects of academic dishonesty and contribute to the

development of effective strategies to promote academic integrity.

CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Education is the process by which people learn new knowledge . Without it, people

would not be able to accomplish their goals in life, and would be unable to achieve success in

life. Students and teachers have various conflicts encountered at school, one of these is

academic dishonesty, specifically cheating. Academic cheating as the dissemination of

knowledge, the use of assistance, taking advantage of weaknesses, and the copying of

information or responses (Anderman & Won, 2017). While, Fachruddin (2017) stated that

Academic dishonesty can be characterized as deception, insincerity, or plagiarism.

In today’s time, cheating is one of the ways for some students to pass their

assignments, quizzes and mostly in their exam, especially when they are not prepared. While

some students might look up answers online, use hidden notes, or copy from their friends and

classmates rather than studying well. Though some students cheat because they want to

achieve excellent scores without working hard, others do it because they fear failing. They

believe that cheating is a simple and quick way to finish in school. On the other hand,

academic performance might be negatively impacted by cheating. According to Northern

Illinois University (n.d.), cheating can have a negative effect on students' academic

achievement since it makes it difficult for teachers to assess their knowledge accurately.

The study aims to figure out the effects of cheating on academic performances and

understand how cheating impacts the students’ learning, grades, and future success. And also,
it seeks to investigate the causes of student cheating, the immediate and long-term effects,

and the impact on the students' overall education.

In addition, according to the University at Buffalo (n.d.), there are various reasons

why students cheat, including poor time management, stress, wanting to help friends, fear of

failure and temptation. And according to the data from Meazure Learning (2023), between

50% to 70% of students acknowledge cheating at some point during their academic careers.

Academic dishonesty is a rising problem that has an impact on students' performance

and learning. The contribution of the study is to raise awareness to the students that academic

dishonesty can affect academic performances. And also, to help educators and schools to

develop new and improved teaching and assessment methods to reduce the temptation to

cheat.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the The Planned Behavior Theory, it suggests that cheating

occurs due to both the opportunity to cheat and the intention to do so (Ajzen, 1969). This

means that simply limiting opportunities—such as increased exam monitoring—may not

completely prevent cheating, as students with strong intentions to cheat may still do so when

given another chance.

Conceptual Framework
Figure 1. Shows the Framework for “The Effects of Cheating on the Academic

Performance of 10-David’’.

The independent variable is cheating. Cheating is unauthorized use of data, resources,

tools, or methods to complete academic assignments is known as cheating. Copying during

an exam that should be performed individually, for instance, is prohibited and is therefore

regarded as cheating. It is considered that a student is helping or encouraging cheating when

they permit another student to take ideas from their work. The dependent variable is the

Academic Performance of the students of 10-David.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to study the effects of cheating on the academic performances of

the students of 10-David at Iluminada Roxas Mendoza Memorial High School.

1. How may the respondents describe cheating at school?

2. What are the effects of cheating on the academic performance of the students?

3. What are the reasons why students engage in cheating?

4. What are the common forms of cheating practiced by the students of

10-David?

Hypothesis of the Study

This study stated that cheating greatly affects students' academic performances of

10-David.

H₀: Cheating greatly affects the Academic Performances of 10-David.

Significance of the Study

students of 10-David.

Student from 10 David. This study will help them understand the possible effects of

cheating on their academic performances. And also, motivates them to practice study habits

and motivates them to be a responsible and honest student.

and accountable school culture.

Scope and Delimitation

The study entitled “The effects of cheating on the Academic Performances 10-David

was designed to identify the effects of cheating on the students academic performance, and

find possible solutions to spread awareness regarding this matter.

This research only investigated the effects of cheating on 10-David’s academic

performances through interviews, surveys, and observations. The present study did not

include other aspects outside of this scope, such as the effects of cheating on the students of

10- Joseph and Isaac.

The researchers gathered data from grade Gr.10-David students, through interviews,

open-ended question questionnaires, and observations in a qualitative manner.
