2025 Guide to

SUMMER CAMPS,
INSTITUTES & PROGRAMS
November 2024
Editor’s Note
This year’s Summer Programs Guide includes more and deeper information about each
2025 Guide to program, with greater detail about costs, students, repertoire highlights, and contact

SUMMER CAMPS, information.

There was once a time when the family packed up its golf clubs, fishing rods, and tennis
INSTITUTES & PROGRAMS racquets to head for their favorite vacation spot. Now, it seems, people are packing up their
favorite vocal scores, batons, and musical instruments and heading off to a conservatory,
mountain-top music festival, historic European arena, or woodsy music camp. Among musicians, amateurs to pros,
old to young, summertime is less about vacationing than it is about honing the auditory cortex.
As I read through these listings, I like to fantasize about where I might go to warm up my vocal cords or reawaken
my pianism and not be the only adult on the premises. Each year, it seems, there are more and more options for
non-professionals of a certain age. I have a special fondness for Berkshire International, which I attended in its early
years and spent a week rehearsing and ultimately performing Verdi’s Four Sacred Pieces with 120 strangers, several
of whom became good friends.
Most of the programs herein, however, are geared to the young virtuoso-in-training. They range in size from 3,000
students attending six different sessions at Interlochen Music Camp to 20 attending one session at the American
Bach Soloists, from 200 teachers to six, from thousands of dollars to completely free, from all periods and genres to
one. Age and level of skill are also wide, from third grader to graduate student and beyond, from audition for entry
to audition for skill-level only to no audition. There are chamber music programs, orchestra training sessions, a
ballet intensive, opera institutes, and even a jazz big-band session for adults.
So if you want to spend your summer honing that auditory cortex, have a look at our bounty of options. At least
one will have your name on it.
Regards,
Susan Elliott
