Entry requirements

i) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in Computing or related fields with a minimum

CGPA of 2.50, as accepted by the Academic Senate.

OR

ii) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in Computing or related fields with a minimum
CGPA of 2.00 but less than 2.50 can be accepted subject to internal assessment.

OR

iii) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in a Non-Computing field with a minimum

CGPA of 2.00 can be accepted subject to internal assessment to identify the
appropriate prerequisite courses that are equivalent to the candidate’s working
experience in Computing or related fields.

OR

iv) A bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in a Non-Computing field with a minimum

CGPA of 2.00 can be accepted subject to passing the appropriate prerequisite
courses.
OR

v) Other qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in

Computing or related fields recognised by the Government of Malaysia must
fulfil the requirement in Item i or ii.
OR

vi) APEL.A Certification (T-7) (Recognition of Prior Learning).

AND
English-Language Requirement: Applicants whose medium of instruction for their
first degree was not English will be required to provide evidence of language ability
via an IELTS test result (minimum score of 6.0).

Prerequisite pathway
Candidates without a bachelor’s degree in Computing or related fields (minimum
CGPA of 2.00) have the opportunity to enrol in the Master in Data Science upon
the completion of two prerequisite subjects – Foundations of Programming, and
Database Concepts and Principles – which can be finished in a total of 7 weeks or
under, and taken one at a time or concurrently.

Subject overview

These non-credit bridging subjects have been carefully designed to familiarise

students with the terms and concepts fundamental to the field of data science,
as well as to test the ability to solve problems analytically.

In Foundations of Programming, you will gain a practical understanding

of Python, an easy-to-learn language that is highly valued by computing
professionals.

Database Concepts and Principles, meanwhile, provides primary knowledge of

the key concepts needed to analyse, design and implement databases using
Structured Query Language (SQL).

Learning outcomes

• Gain a fundamental understanding of Python, one of the most suitable

programming languages for novices to learn and highly valued by professionals.
• Recognise the underlying concepts of data modelling and relational database
systems, and use SQL to query relational database systems.
• Design and construct relational databases, and write, run, and debug short
Python scripts to perform automated actions.
