Cover page
It should contain relevant information like student details, module details and title. It should have a professional
appearance therefore do not use funky graphics, pictures or text formatting.
Declaration
I declare that this assignment is my own, original work. All secondary material that I used, whether from print or
electronic sources, has been carefully acknowledged and referenced according to the Mechanical Department
requirements. I have not submitted this work for credit previously. I understand that plagiarism is unacceptable and I
have studied the department’s plagiarism and referencing policies as set out in the Learner guide.

Abstract
The abstract should be able to stand by itself, and it should be brief. Generally, it consists of three parts which answer
these questions:
What did you do? – A statement of the purpose of the experiment, a concise description of the
experiment and physics principles investigated.
What were your results? – Highlight the most significant results of the experiment.
What do these results tell you? – Depending on the type of experiment, this is the conclusions and
implications of the results or it may be lessons learned from the experiment.
Write the abstract after all the other sections are completed. (You need to know everything in the report before you can
write a summary of it.)
Table of contents – optional for lab report
Table of figures - optional for lab report
List of tables - optional for lab report
1. Introduction
Investigate about the topic (i.e. air compressor, polytrophic index) and write relevant information about it. Remember to
reference the acquired information (by numbering in numerical order, in square brackets in text and list all in the
Reference section)
Example of in text referencing: “At present, WEDM is a widespread technique used in industry for high-precision
machining of all types of conductive materials such as metals, metallic alloys, graphite, or even some ceramic materials,
of any hardness [1,2]. …. Without WEDM, the fabrication of precision workpiece requires many hours of manual
grinding and polishing [3]. Apart from that, WEDM is widely used in the area of production of aerospace parts micro gas
turbine blades and electronic components [4]”.
2. Theory or Background
Explain the theory that is applicable to your topic, what equations are used and what procedure of finding
results. State all assumptions.
3. Observations and calculations
Tabulate the readings and do one set of calculations in the body of the report. Attach the rest of your
calculations in the appendix.
4. Discussion of results
Present all results in table format, draw graphs and/or diagrams.
Discussion should explain the experimental purpose, briefly summarize the basic idea of the experiment with
emphasis on the measurements were made and transition to discussing the results and graphs obtained. State
only the key results quantitatively (with numerical values).
Your discussion should address questions such as:
What is the relationship between observations and your final results?
What trends were observed?
What can you conclude from the graphs that you made?
How did the independent variables affect the dependent variables? (For example, did an increase in a
given measured (independent) variable result in an increase or decrease in the associated calculated
(dependent) variable?)
Describe how your experimental results agree with the theory. Do not write a single statement that your results
agree or disagree with theory. Find and explain the sources of error.
5. Conclusions and recommendations– you may omit this section if your discussion is comprehensive and does
cover it.

Appendices
Attach any additional relevant information i.e. all other sets of calculations, catalogue extracts, charts, tables, , that
supported the information used in the report.
Endnotes
Compressor experiment is assessing GA4 therefore a satisfactory performance must be obtained for all the
components provided in the rubric. Failing this will result in
No lab report should look alike other lab report
If only parts of the report are found identical with other report, those will not be considered for marking in both
reports
Plagiarism is not allowed. If found, it will be reported.
Remember to use referencing throughout the text. If information is provided with no mention of the source,
that information will be disregarded.
Body of the report (from Introduction to discussion) should have maximum 10 pages.
