Assignemtn I - Modfied

The document outlines an assignment for EE309, detailing tasks related to electrical engineering concepts such as RMS values, back EMF, and self-inductance calculations for circuits. It also discusses the design of chargers for electric bikes and scooters, considering different domestic power supplies and battery specifications. Additional tasks include analyzing inductance waveforms, drawing power train schematics, and explaining control mechanisms for ceiling fans.

Even Semester (Jan-May) 2024-25

Assignment I (50M)

Upload date: 11/02/2025; 02.30AM

Submission deadline: 25/02/2025; 11.59PM.

1. a) Let f1 and f2 be two different harmonics of f0. Show that the effective value (RMS)
1
of 𝑣(𝑡) = 𝑉1 cos(2𝜋𝑓1 𝑡 + 𝜃1 ) + 𝑉2 cos(2𝜋𝑓2 𝑡 + 𝜃2 ) is √2 (𝑉12 + 𝑉22 ).
b) Find out the rms value of 𝑣(𝑡) = ∑𝑛𝑘=1 𝑉𝑘 cos(2𝜋𝑓𝑘 𝑡 + 𝜃𝑘 ).
c) An air-core solenoid with length 30cm, area of cross-section 25cm2 and
number of turns 500, carries a current of 2.5A. The current in the solenoid drops
to zero in 10-3 sec when the solenoid is detached from the source emf. How much
is the average back emf induced across the ends of the open switch in the circuit?
Ignore the variation in the magnetic fields near the ends of the solenoid.
d) Current in a circuit falls from 5.0A to 0.0A in 0.1s. If an average emf of 200V
induced, give an estimate of the self-inductance of the circuit.

2. An international electric bike company is launching its e-bi-cycles and e-scooters

category vehicles across various countries. The domestic power supplies for these
countries are not identical. Therefore, the chargers needed for such vehicles are also
thus categorized into four types as shown in Table 1. Also, consider the architecture
required for designing such charger as shown in Fig.2.

S.No EV type Battery Compatible Domestic power supply

Charger I e-bi-cycle 25V, 5Ah 230V,50Hz,1-phase
Charger II e-bi-cycle 25V, 5Ah 110V,60Hz, 1-phase
Charger III e-scooter 60V, 15Ah 230V,50Hz,1-phase
Charger IV e-scooter 60V,15Ah 110V,60Hz, 1-phase

operated with a frequency of 10,000Hz to generate a square wave that is filtered for output
DC voltage by LC filter to charge the batteries. All batteries are charged with 1C rating,
please calculate the following.

a. Calculate the DC link voltages and duty ratios needed to charge batteries in all cases.
b. Design the LC values of low pass filter components for all cases. Assume quality

the EV charger (mainly LC filter size).
d. Comment how battery size of the EV influences the size of the EV charger (mainly
LC filter size).
e. What is the effect of quality factor of filter on size of the charger. (mainly LC filter
