ASSIGNMENT
Course Name: EM Waves & Guide Structure A/Year: 2020/21
Course Code: ECEg – 4291 Semester: I
Target Group: G4ECE – Communication Max. Mark: 10%
Engineering
Submission Date: June 29/2021
INSTRUCTION:
- Show all the necessary steps unambiguously. Neatness has its own value.
- Copying from other student makes disqualification for both parties.
- Check your booklet holds a total of ten (10).
PART I: Work Out Problems (10 points)
1. A lossy material has 𝜇 = 5𝜇𝑜 , 𝜀 = 2𝜀𝑜 . If at 5 𝑀𝐻𝑧, the phase constant is 10 𝑟𝑎𝑑⁄𝑚,

2. The magnetic field component of an EM wave propagating through a nonmagnetic
medium 𝜇 = 𝜇0 is
𝑯 = 25 sin(2 ∗ 108 𝑡 + 6𝑥) 𝒂𝑦 𝑚𝐴⁄𝑚
Determine:
a) The direction of wave propagation.
b) The permittivity of the medium.

a) 𝜆 and 𝜔 of the wave in air and the transmitted wave in the dielectric medium
b) The incident 𝐻𝑖 field
c) Γ and 𝜏
d) The total electric field and the time – average power in both regions
4. A telephone line has the following parameters:
𝑅 = 40 𝛺 ⁄𝑚 , 𝐺 = 400 𝜇𝑆⁄𝑚 , 𝐿 = 0.2 𝜇𝐻 ⁄𝑚 , 𝐶 = 0.5 𝑛𝐹 ⁄𝑚
a) If the line operates at 10 𝑀𝐻𝑧, calculate the characteristic impedance 𝑍𝑜 and
velocity 𝑢.
b) After how many meters will the voltage drop by 30 𝑑𝐵 in the line?
