Tutorial 1 Questions

The document contains a series of physics problems related to motion, including calculations for velocity, acceleration, displacement, and trajectory for various scenarios involving particles, vehicles, and projectiles. Each question requires the application of kinematic equations and principles of dynamics to solve for specific variables. The problems range from basic particle motion to more complex scenarios involving multiple objects and angles.

Tutorial 1 Questions

1. The position coordinate of a particle which is confined to move along a straight line is
given by s=2t3-24t+6, where s is measured in meters from a convenient origin and t is sin seconds.
Determine;
a) The time required for the particle to reach a velocity of 72 m/s from its initial condition at
t=0?
b) The acceleration of the particle when v=30 m/s?
c) The net displacement of the particle during the interval from t=1s to t=4s?
2. The velocity of a particle which moves along the s-axis is given by v=2+5t3/2, where t is in
seconds and v is in meters per second. Evaluate the displacement s, velocity v, and
acceleration a when t=4s. The particle is at the origin when s=0 at t=0.
3. The pilot of a jet transport brings the engines to full take off power before releasing the
brakes as the aircraft is standing on the runway. The jet thrust remains constant and the
aircraft has a near constant acceleration of 0.4g. If the takeoff speed is 200 km/h, calculate
the distance s and the time t from rest to take off?
4. A car comes to a complete stop from an initial speed of 80 km/h in a distance of 30m. With
the same constant acceleration, what would be the stopping distance s from an initial speed
of 110 km/h?
5. An artillery shell is fired with a muzzle velocity of 200m/s at an angle of 60° to the
horizontal. It is observed that the angle of elevation of the point of impact from the gun is
20°. Calculate the coordinates of the displacement of the point of impact from the gun?
6. A scud missile is launched into space at a speed of 30 m/s at an angle of 450 above the
horizontal. At the same time, another scud is launched 100m away towards the first scud
in order to intercept it at a velocity of 50 m/s at an angle α above the horizontal. Find when
and where the interception occurred?
7. The position of the slider P in the rotating slotted arm OA is controlled by the power
. ..
screw as shown in Fig.1. At the instant represented,  = 8 rad/s and  = -20 rad/s2. Also,
. ..
at this instant, r= 200 mm, r = -300mm/s and r = 0. For this instant determine the
acceleration of P? (5 marks)

8. A motorist is travelling on a curved section of a highway of radius 750m at the speed of
100km/h. The motorist suddenly applies the brakes, causing the automobile to slow down
at a constant rate to a speed of 75km/h after 8 seconds. Determine the acceleration of the
automobile immediately after the brakes have been applied?
9. A train enters a curved horizontal section of a track at a speed of 100km/h and slows down
with a constant acceleration to 50km/h in 12 seconds. An accelerometer mounted inside
the train records a horizontal acceleration of 2m/s2 when the train is 6 seconds into the
curve. Calculate the radius of curvature, ρ, of the track for this instant
10. Two jet planes are flying horizontally at the same elevation as shown in the Figure 2. Plane
A is flying along a straight line path, and at the instant it has a speed of 700 km/h and an
acceleration of 50 km/h2. Plane B is flying along a circular path at 600 km/h and decreasing
its speed at the rate of 100 km/h2. Determine the velocity and acceleration of B as measured
by the pilot in A? (10 marks)

11. Car A has a forward speed of 18 km/h and is accelerating at 3m/s2 as shown in Figure 1.
Determine the velocity and acceleration of the car relative to observer B, who rides in a
non-rotating chair on the Ferris wheel. The angular rate Ω=3 rev/min of the Ferris wheel is
constant. (10 marks)
