Lesson Title: Building Bridges: Effective Teamwork

Subject: Social Studies/Life Skills

Grade Level: 6th Grade

Time Allotment: 75 minutes

Learning Objectives:

Cognitive:

•Students will be able to identify key elements of effective teamwork and communication.

•Students will be able to analyze different communication styles.

Affective:

•Students will demonstrate a positive attitude toward collaborative work.

•Students will express empathy and respect for diverse perspectives.

Psychomotor:

•Students will actively participate in a hands-on team-building activity.

•Students will demonstrate effective non-verbal communication.

Materials:

•Building materials (e.g., straws, tape, paper, string)

•Worksheets with reflection questions

Whiteboard or projector Optional: short video clips demonstrating teamwork


I. COREE Model:

A. Connect (Linking Prior Knowledge & Relevance) - (15 minutes):

Description: Start with a brief, engaging scenario:

Imagine you and your friends are stranded on an island, and you need to build a shelter. How would you
work together?

Activities:

Brief class discussion on the challenges of teamwork.

Show a short, inspiring video clip of a team working effectively.

Pose the question: What makes a team successful?

Purpose: To activate prior knowledge and create interest.

B. Observe (Inquiry, Questioning & Critical Thinking) (25 minutes):

Description: Students will engage in a hands-on team-building activity.

Activities:

Divide students into small groups.

Provide each group with building materials and a challenge: Build the tallest freestanding structure
possible.

Observe and encourage students to communicate and collaborate.

Psychomotor: The act of building the structure, and manipulating the materials.

Cognitive: The students must think about design, and problem solving.

Purpose: To provide experiential learning and promote collaboration.


C. Reflect (Metacognition & Self-Assessment) (20 minutes):

Description: Students will analyze their teamwork experience and evaluate their communication.

Activities:

Facilitate a class discussion:

•What communication strategies were effective?

•What challenges did you face?

• How did you resolve conflicts?

Students will complete a worksheet with reflection questions:

How did you feel during the activity?

What did you learn about your own communication style?

Cognitive: Analyzing communication strategies.

Affective: Reflecting on personal feelings and experiences.

Purpose: To develop critical thinking and self-awareness.

D. Engage (Application & Practice) (15 minutes):

Description: Students will apply their learning to real-world scenarios.

Activities:

Ask students to brainstorm examples of effective teamwork in their daily lives (e.g.,sports, school
projects).
Have students role-play different communication scenarios, focusing on active listening and empathy.

Affective: Practicing empathy through role playing.

Cognitive: Applying learned concepts to real-world situations.

Purpose: To promote practical application and transfer of skills.

II. Evaluate (Assessment & Feedback) (5 minutes):

Formative Assessment:

Observations during the team-building activity.

Participation in class discussions.

Review of completed worksheets.

Summative Assessment:

The completed worksheets, and observations of the team building activity will act as a summative
assessment.

III. Assignment:

Activity: Students will write a short reflection on their teamwork experience, including what they
learned about themselves and their communication styles.

Purpose: To encourage students to further process their learning and apply it to future teamwork
situations.

IV. Differentiation:
For struggling learners:

Provide simplified instructions and visual aids.

Assign students to supportive groups.

Offer individual assistance.

For advanced learners:

Challenge students to design more complex structures.
