Mixture Separation
Mixture Separation
Background:
Separating a mixture by physical means has many important applications. For example, if a toxic
chemical is spilled into a reservoir the EPA must have a means of extracting it so that the water is safe
to drink again. In this lab you will be given a mixture of sand, plastic beads, and iron filings. Your
objective is to determine which separation techniques to use to isolate the three components and
determine the weight percent of each in the mixture.
What kinds of physical separation techniques could you use to separate out the
three components?
How can you be sure not to lose any of your mixture in the separation process?
If we added salt as a fourth component to our mixture, how could we separate that out as
well?
Hypothesis:
Formulate a hypothesis stating what you think will happen in your process- this does not need
to be an if/then statement.
Materials:
List all the materials needed for the lab including how much of each material is needed.
Procedure:
List the steps needed to successfully collect data to answer the research question. Things to
think about are…
○ What IV & DV data needs to be collected during the experiment?
○ What will be used to measure the data? What units should the data be in?
○ When will the data be recorded?
Data Collection (table):
What is your data table(s) going to look like? Create your data table here….
- Things you need to include are the total mass of the components, and the percent mass of each
component of the mixture.
