Question 1: (30 Marks)


a) Distinguish between computer organization and computer architecture.
(2 marks)
b) List and briefly explain main structural components of a processor.
(4 marks)
c) Using diagrams distinguish between a number word and an instruction word as was
implemented in IAS computer.
(4 marks)
d) Relate four consequences of Moore's law to the modern computer.
(4 marks)
e) Describe three CPU’s inbuilt techniques that enhance its speed of execution.
(4 marks)
f) Sketch a graph showing evolution of processor logic speed and speed of data transfer
from main memory.
(4 marks)
g) Consider cache read operation flow diagram shown in Fig.1. Complete the diagram
by filling in the missing contents labeled A, B and C.

h) A non-random access memory has an average access time of 4.7µs. If it takes 5.1µs
to read 5 x 109 bits, determine transfer rate for this memory.

i) Compare and contrast EPROM and EEPROM.

Question 2: (20 Marks)


a) Describe four advantages of using a glass substrate for a magnetic disk.
(4 marks)
b) Consider a single-platter disk with the following parameters: rotation speed: 7200
rpm; number of tracks on one side of platter: 30,000; number of sectors per track:
600; seek time: one ms for every hundred tracks traversed. Let the disk receive a
request to access a random sector on a random track and assume the disk head
starts at track 0.

i. Calculate its average seek time.

ii. Calculate its average rotational latency.
(2 marks)
iii. Determine transfer time for a sector.
(2 marks)
iv. Determine the total average time to satisfy a request.
(2 marks)
c) Perform the following binary subtractions using 2C.
i) 100000 - 000001 ii) 1111111 – 1010101
(6 marks)
d) Using normal subtraction, verify that the solutions in c (i) above are accurate.

required for its operation. Describe various types of memories in the memory
hierarchy and illustrate the variation of the cost and performance for the various
memories in the hierarchy.

of these components.
