Select one (1) of the three passages/topics posted to the “Assignment 4” block on
EClass.
o Topic 1: “Why feeling ‘whatever’ or ‘meh’ is more widespread and more
important than previously believed.”
o Topic 2: “The old left-centre-right political axis has been replaced.”
o Topic 3: “Donald Trump would be the worst of presidents for the worst of
times.”
Save your chosen passage and name it according to the submission file naming protocol.

Complete the following Passage Analysis Steps, below, as taught in lesson videos.
Step 1: Complete the “Read for Meaning Steps.” (Out of 10 marks.) [Taught in Week 7 Lesson 5,
and reviewed in Week 20 Lesson 14.]
Read through the passage or article once without writing anything on it. Be
mindful of meaning, purpose, and conclusion. <Not graded.>
Draw a line separating each paragraph of the article.
Number each paragraph.
Highlight signal words, including premise and conclusion indicator words in each
paragraph.
Create a “Legend” showing what colour of highlighting indicates what.
Using a different colour of highlighting, highlight the main or central concepts in
each paragraph.
Underline the main point or topic sentence of each paragraph. Underline only the
main point of the paragraph or topic sentence.
Clarify the meaning of key concepts, phrases, and claims.
o Bold any words that you do not know the meaning of. Look these words
up in the dictionary. Write the definition in the margin of the article or
insert definition in body of the text. <Not graded.>
o Write out any missing referent words in pointy brackets to clarify meaning.
Put the text inside the pointy brackets into italics.
As you read, make 3 notes to yourself about your response to the passage or
article, for example, your thoughts, emotional reaction, questions, confusions,
interesting points, and so on. Make each note a different kind of response. For
example, not all questions. Put these notes in pointy brackets and italics.
Create a summary of the article by copying and pasting the main point that you
underlined in each paragraph into a “Summary” at the end of Step 1. Number
each point in the summary according to the number of the paragraph that it
appears in. There should be as points in the summary as there are number of
paragraphs in the article.
State the most main conclusion of the article.

a) State the two most main concepts around which the passage turns. (Out of 2
marks.)

b) Formulate the most main conceptual question with which the passage is
concerned. (Out of 2 marks.)
c) Extract what the author means by the two main concepts, that is, provide a
detailed understanding of how the author defines the concepts in chart or
list form. (Out of 10 marks; 5 marks for each concept.)
Step 3: Apply the 4-question method for assessing concepts. (Out of 18 marks.) [Taught in
Week 21 Lesson 14 continued.]
Evaluate the speaker or author’s use of concepts by answering the following four
questions:
1. Are they clearly defined? Out of 5 marks.
2. Are they used in a sense that it too narrow or too wide? Out of 5 marks.
3. Are they used consistently, or do they shift in meaning throughout the article?
Out of 5 marks.
4. Can their weaknesses be strengthened (i.e., positively criticized)? Out of 3 marks.
