Assignment 1

The document outlines Assignment 1 for MECH 403 - Mechanics of Materials, due on February 27, 2025, with various problems related to stress analysis in structural components. It includes calculations for average normal stress, shearing stress, bearing stress, allowable loads, and deflections for different materials and configurations. Each problem requires specific engineering principles to determine the mechanical properties and responses of materials under load.

MECH 403 - Mechanics of
Materials

Student Name: ……………….………………………………………. Student ID: …………………….. Tutorial Group: ……....

Print and answer the following questions Due date: Thursday 27/2/2025
Problem 1:
Each of the four vertical links has an 8×36
𝑚𝑚 uniform rectangular cross section, and
each of the four pins has a 16 𝑚𝑚 diameter.
Determine (a) the maximum value of the
average normal stress in the links connecting
(1) points B and D,
(2) points C and E,
(b) the average shearing stress in the pin at B,
(c) the average bearing stress at B in member
BD,
(d) the average bearing stress at B in member
ABC, knowing that this member has a 10×50
𝑚𝑚 uniform rectangular cross-section.

Problem 2:
In the structure shown,
an 8 𝑚𝑚 diameter pin is
used at A, and 12 𝑚𝑚
diameter pins are used
at B and D. Knowing that
the ultimate shearing
stress is 100 𝑀𝑃𝑎 at all
connections and that the
ultimate normal stress is
250 𝑀𝑃𝑎 in each of the
two links joining B and
D, determine the
allowable load P if an
overall factor of safety of
3 is desired.

Problem 3:
Link BD is made of brass (𝐸=105 𝐺𝑃𝑎)
and has a cross-sectional area of 240
𝑚𝑚2. Link CE is made of aluminum
(𝐸=72 𝐺𝑃𝑎) and has a cross-sectional
area of 300 𝑚𝑚2. Knowing that they
support rigid member ABC, determine
the maximum force P that can be
applied vertically at point A if the
deflection of A is not to exceed 0.35
𝑚𝑚.

Problem 4:
Two cylindrical rods, one of steel and
the other of brass, are joined at C and
restrained by rigid supports at A and E.
For the loading shown and knowing
that 𝐸𝑠=200 𝐺𝑃𝑎 and 𝐸𝑏=105 𝐺𝑃𝑎,
determine (a) the reactions at A and E,
(b) the deflection of point C.

Problem 5:
A standard tension test is used to
determine the properties of an
experimental plastic.
The test specimen is a 5/8 𝑖𝑛 diameter rod
and it is subjected to an 800 𝑙𝑏 tensile
force.
Knowing that an elongation of 0.45 𝑖𝑛 and
a decrease in the diameter of 0.025 𝑖𝑛 are
observed in a 5 𝑖𝑛 gage length, determine
the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of
rigidity, and Poisson’s ratio for the material.
