Assingment 1

The assignment requires calculations related to fluid mechanics, including the dynamic viscosity of oil between a square plate and an inclined plane, the capillary effect in a glass tube for water and mercury, the differential reading of an inverted U-tube manometer with specific gravities, and the total pressure and center of pressure on an isosceles triangular plate immersed in oil. Each problem involves specific parameters such as dimensions, weights, and fluid properties. The assignment is due on February 28, 2025.

ASSINGMENT 1

EMG 2205 Fluid Mech I

Due on 28th Friday Feb. 2025
1. Calculate the dynamic viscosity of an oil, which is used for lubrication between a square
plate of size 0.8 m * 0.8 m and an inclined plane with angle of inclination of 30° as shown.
The weight of the square plate is 300 N and it slides down the inclined plane with a
uniform velocity of 0.3 m/s. the thickness of oil film is 1.5 mm.

2. Calculate the capillary effect in millimeters in a glass tube of 4 mm diameter, when

immersed in a) water b) mercury. The temperature of the liquid is 20°C in contact with air
are 0.073575 N/m and 0.51 N/m respectively. The angle of contact for water is zero that
for mercury is 130°. Take density of water at 20°C as equal to 998 kg/m3.

3. Find out the differential reading ‘h’ of an inverted U-tube manometer containing oil of
specific gravity 0.7 as the manometric fluid when connected across pipes A and B as
shown, conveying liquids of specific gravities 1.2 and 1.0 and immiscible with
manometric fluid. Pipes A and B are located at the same level and assume the pressures at
A and B to be equal.
4. Determine the total pressure and center of pressure on an isosceles triangular plate of base
4 m and altitude 4 m when it is immersed vertically in an oil of sp. gr. 0.9. The base of the
plate coincides with the free surface of oil.
