THE HISTORY OF
NEW ORLEANS!
New Orleans is in the south of the U.S., in the state of
Louisiana. It’s famous for music, food, and Mardi Gras!
EUROPEAN COLONIZATION
The French colonized the area in the 1680s. They created the city
of La Nouvelle-Orleans in 1718. They built the city using a grid
pattern, using slaves to build public buildings. You can still see
the grid pattern today, for example in the French Quarter.
The Spanish took control of the city in the 1760s. A fire destroyed
many buildings in 1788. They rebuilt the city, and today you can
see buildings from this time, such as the St. Louis Cathedral and
the Cabildo, the old city hall building.
New Orleans finally became a part of the U.S. in 1803.
TODAY
New Orleans today has a colorful mix of cultures: Native
American culture, French and Spanish colonial culture, and
African culture from the city’s history of slavery.

Mitsuko, Japan
My favorite savory snack is onigiri. It’s white rice in a triangle
shape and inside it has some fish or vegetables. We also eat
a lot of potato chips—we have some flavors that are hard to
find in other countries, like soy sauce and seaweed! There
are many delicious cakes in Japan, too, like taiyaki. It’s a cake
made from flour and eggs, in the shape of a fish, and in the
middle there’s some chocolate, cheese, or sweet potato.
Ajani, Nigeria
Almost everyone here in Nigeria likes plantain chips.
Plantains are a type of fruit like bananas. We slice them
and fry them, and then add salt and pepper. Delicious! I
also love kuli kuli. You take some peanuts, pepper, garlic,
and sugar, and make small balls which you fry. My favorite
sweet snack is puff puff, which are like doughnuts without
the hole! They’re great with some sugar on top.
Maryam, India
If you come to India, you have to try panipuri.
You find it everywhere here. It’s a fried ball of thin
bread with spicy onions, potatoes, and sweet sauce
in the middle. You put the whole thing in your
mouth! My favorite snack, though, is vada pav. It’s
like a spicy potato sandwich. You put some fried
potato in a bread roll and add green chili pepper.

I’m Jenny Jones, and I’m a reporter with the website, Climate Help. I’m traveling to
Canada’s Arctic region (Nunavut) by plane to learn about climate change. Today, I’m
in a village named Cambridge Bay.
In the Arctic, the ice is melting very quickly. The area is getting warm. This change
affects the animals. Polar bears live in the Arctic, and they need ice to find food and
live. But the ice is disappearing. Many polar bears are hungry. Sometimes, they come
to towns and villages looking for food, and they come close to humans.
Tomorrow, I’m visiting a village to talk with an Inuit family about the problem. The Inuit are the
traditional people of northern Canada. In the winter, they hunt on the ice. But now, the ice is becoming
thin, and it isn’t safe. People fall into the cold water. Also, when they can’t hunt, the Inuit people buy
expensive, unhealthy food from stores. This means that they are losing their
traditional culture of hunting and fishing.
I want to find out about the problems and tell my readers all about them.
Later this week, I’m going fishing with Anik, a young Inuit man. I can’t wait!
Find these words and check their meaning. 3 Imagine you are visiting a village named Coral
melting disappearing hunt Harbor in Canada’s Arctic region. Look at the fact
file. Write a social media post about your trip. Say:
3 Why is thin ice dangerous? I’m traveling to Coral Harbor in Canada’s Arctic
region. …

Subject: an awesome day at Conner Prairie
Hey, Scarlett!
We had a school trip to Conner Prairie in Indiana last Friday. It’s a
living history museum, and you see life in the 1800s! There are people
in clothes from the time, and they show what life was like then.
My favorite part was the 1836 Prairietown. It’s like you’re in a different
time! There was a school, and we had an English class from the past.
It was hard work, but it was fun!
In 1859, there was a hot-air balloon in Conner Prairie. 20,000 people
were there to see it go up! And guess what? Today, they have another
balloon named the 1859 Balloon Voyage. This balloon goes 350 feet
up into the air and you can go up in it! I had a fantastic view of the whole place, but it was a little windy.
There’s also a Native American area named 1816 Lenape Indian Camp. Here, they teach you about the
life of indigenous people. They had a hard life, but they had some very interesting traditions.
It’s an amazing place to visit.
Write and tell me all your news!
