Quarter 2 - Remedial Performance Task 1

The document outlines a performance task for students to demonstrate their understanding of polynomial functions through three main activities: creating a visual representation of a polynomial function, solving a real-life word problem modeled by a polynomial, and analyzing a polynomial graph. Each task has specific instructions and examples to guide students, along with a rubric for assessment based on understanding, creativity, and analysis. The objective is to apply mathematical concepts to real-life scenarios and enhance graphical interpretation skills.

Quarter 2: Remedial Performance Task 1

Name: Section: Date given: 10/22/2024

Objective:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of polynomial functions and their graphical behavior by
solving real-life problems and creating visual representations of polynomial graphs.
Instructions:
1. Polynomial Function Illustration (7 points)
Create a visual representation of a polynomial function of degree 3 or higher. You can use graphs,
drawings, or digital illustrations. Include:
o The polynomial function equation (e.g., 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑥).
o The key features of the graph: intercepts, turning points, end behavior, and the general shape of the
graph.
o Highlight the end behavior of the function, showing how the function behaves as x approaches
+∞, −∞.
Example:
Sketch the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 6𝑥 2 + 9𝑥. Label the x-intercepts, y-intercept, and turning points. Show how the
graph behaves as x increases or decreases infinitely.
2. Word Problem with a Polynomial Function (5 points)
Write and solve a real-life word problem that can be modeled by a polynomial function.
o Explain the scenario and show how the polynomial function is used to model it.
o Solve the problem and interpret the solution.
Example:
"A ball is thrown upwards from a height of 10 meters with a velocity that follows the equation ℎ(𝑡) = −5𝑡 2 + 20𝑡 +
10, where h(t) is the height of the ball at time t seconds. How long does it take for the ball to hit the ground? Show
all work and explain the result."

3. Graph Analysis and Interpretation (8 points)

Choose a polynomial function (or use one provided by your teacher) and analyze its graph.
o Identify and interpret the roots (x-intercepts) and turning points (maxima or minima).
o Analyze the function’s end behavior.
o Determine the intervals of increase and decrease.
o Create a detailed graph and illustrate your findings
Example:
Analyze the polynomial function 𝑓(𝑥) = −2𝑥 4 + 8𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 2 + 10𝑥 − 4. Draw the graph, label the key features, and
describe the turning points, end behavior, and where the graph increases or decreases.
