Math 201 – Midterm 1 (SAMPLE 2)

(Sabancı University - Fall 2021-2022)

Time allowed is 90 minutes. There are 6 problems worth a total of 50 points.

Problem 1: (7 points)
Given the vectors u = (1, 2, 0), v = (−2, 1, 5), and w = (1, 1, −1):

a. decide whether b = (2, 5, 1) ∈ S(u, v, w);

b. determine the set S(u, v, w) of vectors in R3 which can be written as a linear combination of u, v, w;

c. Describe S(u, v, w) geometrically. Give a concrete description.

Problem 2: (7 points)
Consider the following system of linear equations,

 x3 + 2x4 =1
x1 − x2 + x3 + 3x4 =2

x − x2 + x3 + 3x4 + x5 =3
 1

x1 − x2 + x4 =1

a. Write down the augmented matrix C for this linear system.

b. Use elementary row operations to C to obtain a matrix in reduced row echelon form.

c. Solve the linear system.

Problem 3: (7 points)  
1 0 1 2
 0 2 0 −4 
Consider the matrix A =  .
 1 1 0 −1 
0 0 1 1
a. Find the solutions of the homogeneous system Ax = 0.

b. Show that the vectors v1 = (1, 0, 1, 0), v2 = (0, 2, 1, 0), v3 = (1, 0, 0, 1), and v4 = (2, −4, −1, 1) are
linearly dependent and express one of these vectors as a linear combination of the others.

Problem 4: (10 points)  

 1 0 −1
1 0 1 0  2 1 0 
Consider the matrices A =  2 1 0 −1  and B = 
 0
.
1 0 
0 −1 2 −1
−1 1 2
a. Compute AB and BA.

b. Find (AB)−1 using Gauss Jordan elimination.

c. Without using elimination explain why (BA) is not invertible.

Problem 5: (8 points)
Decide whether the following sets are subspaces of the corresponding vector spaces. (related to this week’s
lecture)

a) W = {x ∈ Rn : Ax = 0, A ∈ Mm×n (R)}. (subset Rn ).

b) W = {x ∈ Rn : Ax = b, b 6= 0 , A ∈ Mm×n (R)}. (subset Rn ).

c) W = A ∈ Mn×n (R) : A = −At . (subset of Mn×n (R)).

Problem 6: (11 points)

Decide if the statements below are true or false. Justify your answers.

a) Let A be an n × n matrix. If an entry ckk in the main diagonal of AAt = (cij ) is equal to 0, then A is
singular.

b) If columns 1 and 3 of B are the same, so are the columns 1 and 3 of AB.

c) Subsets of linearly dependent sets are linearly dependent.

d) If u, v, w are linearly independent vectors in Rn , then u+v +w, v, 3u+2v are also linearly independent.

e) If W1 and W2 are subspaces of R3 , then W1 ∪ W2 is also a subspace of R3 . (related to this week’s
