DIGITAL LEVEL
Objective:
1. Perform line levelling on the given area and find out B.S, F.S. and I.S.
2. Find out the actual height difference between two given points with single point measurement tool.
3. Find out the rise and fall for a given undulated area and make contour for the same.
Theory: In a digital leveling system, the observed horizontal plane height is calculated electronically
through a correlation process where the barcode image of the rod is captured and compared with a
standard image stored in the equipment.
Main components of digital level consist of two parts: Hardware (Digital level and levelling staff) and
Software. Typically, digital level has the same optical and mechanical components as a normal automatic
level. Digital levels use electronic image processing to evaluate the special bar-coded staff reading, this
bar-coded pattern is converted into elevation and distance values using a digital image matching
procedure within the instrument. Digital levels allow you to read an angle or a slope as a fraction, decimal,
or percentage.
Instrument Description:
1. Telescope objective with integrated sunshield
2. Telescope focusing knob
3. Trigger key
4. Horizontal tangent screw (endless slow-motion drive)
5. Graduated circle
6. Foot screws
7. Tribrach
8. Power/Communication connector
9. Keyboard
10. Display
11. Window for circular bubble
12. Reticle
13. Cap, to be removed for adjustment of circular bubble
Procedure:
1. Setup your tripod as level as possible, step on tripod legs to drive into the ground.
2. Attach Digital level to the tripod.
3. Adjust level so bubble is centered in vial with the help of foot screws.
4. Adjust recital until cross- hairs are clear.
5. Adjust the objective lens until object you are sighting on is clear.
6. Choose known R.L. point i.e., Benchmark.
7. Press power button key for ON the instrument.
8. Go to ‘Files’ menu in the main dialog box and make a new project file with your desired name.
9. Go to ‘Survey’ menu in the main dialog box and click on the Line levelling option.
10. Find a benchmark location near the spot you want to measure.
11. Position an E-Staff/ digital Staff on the top of your benchmark spot.
12. Now focus the telescope on the spot point until the clear image is attained in the eyepiece.
13. Press trigger key to measure the sighted spot point.
14. Now change the location of e-staff at different points and follow the same steps as mentioned
above to find the different levels and horizontal distances.
15. Store all the readings by pressing ‘S’ enter key.
16. Transfer your file with the help pf Digital level data transfer cable (USB cable) and select the
desired file format (DXF or .csv etc.)
17. After transferring the files, arrange the located points in the excel file or DXF file.
Assignments:
1. Plot the given area surveyed on a drawing sheet and take the printout of all located points.
2. Tabulate all the levels of the observed points.
3. Plot the contour map on a drawing sheet.
Precautions:
1. Compensator must be within the range while measurements.
2. Before mounting the instrument, tripod leg screws must tighten properly.
3. Digital staff must be vertical or perpendicular to the ground surface.
Conclusion:
Write conclusions for all the objectives in your own words.
