2.2 Abs Value Equations

This document provides an introduction to solving absolute value equations and inequalities, emphasizing the concept that absolute value represents distance from zero. It outlines the steps for solving these equations, including isolating the absolute value, setting up two equations, and checking for extraneous solutions. Several example problems are presented along with their solutions to illustrate the process.

2 Absolute Value Equations

Intro to abs value:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApkvLqzj3eU

You will learn how to solve and graph absolute value equations on a
number line
The absolute value is the distance from 0 on a number line
ex. |5| = |-5| = because both #s are 5 units from 0
Definition: |x| = x and |-x| = x (where x is positive)
When solving absolute value equations or inequalities with one variable, you get two answers!

Steps for solving an absolute value equation/inequality

a) Isolate absolute value expression
b) Drop bars and set up 2 equations/inequalities
c) Solve and check
d) No Graph on a # line (for inequalities)
Solve the following absolute value equations
Ex 1: |2y + 3| = 7

*Ex 2: |3x – 2| + 6 = 10

Ex 3: 7|4n – 13| – 4 = 31

*Ex 4: –3|x – 2| – 2 = –23

Ex 5: |y + 6| = 3y – 2
(Omit any extraneous solution – check by plugging in to see if it is true; also, the absolute value of

any number CANNOT be negative so |3x – 7| = -5 has no solution)

2
Ex 6: 4 – 3 |2+ 3 x| = –20

Answers: y=2,-5 x=2,-2/3 n=9/2,2 x=9,-5 y=4(omit -1) x=34/3,-38/3
