Computer Parts and Terminology

1. ​Computing Device:​ an electronic device like a computer, laptop, tablet, and smart
cellphone that can be programmed to do different things, such as show letters on the
screen that you type or talk into it.
2. ​ Computer Brain:​ The nickname is CPU and is made up of chips connected
together that can carry out computer codes.
3. ​ Input device:​ this refers to things you use to put information into the computer,
such as a keyboard, your voice and your touch.
4. ​Output device:​ this refers to something attached to the computer that receives
information from the computer such as a monitor, screen, printer, speaker
5. ​ I/O or input and output device:​ These are devices that can do both, like a
headphone (sends sound out) with a microphone (inputs your voice)
6. ​Monitor:​ may look like a TV set that shows things on the screen that you type, or
draw on connected computing device. It is also called an output device.
7. ​Screen:​ screen is another name for monitor. It shows the information your
computing device sends to it. It can be called an output device
8. ​ Smartphone:​ a cell phone that allows you to send messages, make phone calls,
may have a camera, and can do many things a computer can do because it has a
computer brain inside.
9. ​Desktop computer:​ a personal computer device that uses a keyboard, monitor,
mouse, and tower or base and is plugged into an electrical outlet. It usually sits on a
desk and can run programs.
10.​ Laptop computer:​ a mobile computer device that can run programs like a full
computer, usually has a keyboard and screen and battery.
11. ​Tablet computer:​ a battery-powered mobile computer device that can run
programs like a full computer and is frequently held in the hand.
12. ​Mouse:​ this is a handheld device that moves a cursor around on the screen to type
words or click on objects to select them. It can be attached with a wire or have a battery
and be wireless.
13. ​Mouse pad:​ a small pad used to move a computer mouse on

attached to. It can be called an input device.
15. ​Speakers:​ When connected to a computing device it sends sounds or music out. It
is an output device.

17. ​Microphone:​ A device that picks up sounds, like your voice, and saves it to the
computer.
18. ​USB device:​ A device like a memory stick or flash drive that plugs into the
computer using a USB port.
19.​ Disc drive:​ A device that is built-in or attached to a computer that plays (reads the
data) or records (writes data) from or to a Compact Disc (CD).
20. ​Touchscreen:​ A screen (like on a tablet or smartphone) that does an action based
on your touch. It is also called an input device because it receives your input (touch).
21.​ Projector​: a device that takes images from your computer or technology device and
shows them on a larger screen. This is also called an output device.
22. ​Circuit board​: A board with electronic components such as computer chips that
are mounted on it and that connect to other parts to form a working circuit or brain for a
computing device
23. ​Computer chip​: special material that contains tiny circuits inside that can be
programmed to carry out instructions or actions.
24. ​Speech to text​: An application that creates text from your voice.
25. ​CD​: a compact disc that is made of plastic and covered with one or more layers of a
special coating that can store digital information that is “burned” onto it.
26. ​Printer​: a device that can receive data from a computing device and transfers it
(prints it) onto paper (or other materials). Some use powdered ink and other printers
liquid ink.
27. ​3D printer​: a device that can receive data from a computing device that can print a
three-dimensional object by putting down many thin layers of a material like melted
plastic that hardens into a shape.
