SOCIETY, LAW AND ETHICS

Impact of Technology change on society:

Science and technology are essential ingredients of modern life. They exceed local boundaries and
touches lives of everyone. The technological factors represent the conditions created by men that
have a profound influence on life. Technology is product of civilization. Some of the effects of
technology on society are:
i) Changes in industrialization.
ii) Changes in Urbanization.
iii) Developmeent in transport and communication.
iv) Rise in unemployment.
v) Changes in social institution.
vi) Effect in war- Cyber war.
vii) Secured financial transaction through Net Banking

E-Waste Management:

1. All electronic waste is made up of deadly chemicals such as lead, mercury etc. Improper disposing
of electronic gadgets increases the chances of pollution. This pollution can occur in two ways-
a) The dangerous chemicals may contaminate the soil and thus causing soil or air pollution.
b) When e-Waste is deposited in a land, it tends to leach when water passes through it- thus
collecting the trace elements. The contaminated water then reaches natural groundwater
with increased toxic elements and can be extermely harmful if it enters any drinking water
source.
c) Some eco-friendly waste disposal techniques are –
 Give your electronic waste to a certified E-Waste recycler such as BAN (Basel Action
Network). BAN is a non-profit organization of re-cycling e-waste in a safe and
responsible way. Make sure to extract your personal information and batteries from
the gadgets before disposing.
 Sell your outdated technology through online sites.
 Donate your old gadgets and outdated technology which might become useful to
others like NGOs. Many NGOs conduct such electronic donation programs.
 Visit Civic institutions –like universities, colleges, schools for re-cycling programs
which make the citizens conscious about proper disposing of e-Waste.
 Give your electronic waste to electronic companies and can purchase latest version
with attractive discounts. These electronic companies have set up electronic drop-
off points for e-waste.
Abiding by the above rules may help you to protect both the enviornment and
sensitive information.

Gender and disability issues while using Computers:

1. In the framework of the Computers in Education - data have been collected

concerning the use of computers from 21 countries. This article examines some
results regarding the involvement of women in the implementation and use of
computers in the educational practice of elementary, lower secondary and upper
secondary education in participating countries. The results show that in many
countries computer use in schools is dominated by men. Female teachers have less
regard for their skills and knowledge than their male colleagues. In todays world
many women are showcasing their skills and talents in the IT industry. ICT can be a
powerful tool for political and social empowerment of women and for promotion of
gender equality. There should be more initaitives and programs that encourage girls
to take “Computer Science” as their subject and opt their career in IT industry.
2. Clinical categories of cognitive disabilities include-autism, down syndrome, dyslexia,
discalculia etc. Following are the benefits of ICT that can make children (with
learning disabilities) explore a wide spectrum of learning:
 Standard word processors contain bulit in tools for grammar checking, spell-
checking, predictive typing, speech recognition etc.
 The use of multimedia such as graphics, sound and video can simulate and
encourage interaction and some degree of learning. Learning through
multimedia make teaching learning session much more interactive.
 The use of software games, online interactive apps enable learners having
learning disabilities to play basic cause and effect games and develop basic
computer interacton skills.
 For low-vision students- Braille keyboards, Braille Monitors and Braille
Printers along with screen-readers should be made available to facilitate
their learning and working on computers.

Unique ID and Bio-Metrics:

1. Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data. It refers
to the technology that measures and analyzes human body characteristics such as DNA,
fingerprints, eye retinas, voice patterns, facial patterns, hand measurements for
authentication purposes. Biometrics provides the most accurate and unique method of
identification of a person.

2. Biometrics systems first record an identification feature of a person and then store it in central
database. When biometric recognition is required, the individual biometric characteristics are
recorded again and compared by the system with the stored reference to find the closest
match.

3. Aadhar Card is the best available combination of Unique ID and biometric system as it provides
unique identification number of a person and unique authentication by thumb impression and
retina iris pattern.
