Mid Day400

The document outlines a midterm exam for an Advanced Heat Transfer course at Shiraz University, consisting of three problems. The first problem involves calculating the interface temperature of an insulated electric wire and the effect of changing the insulation thickness. The second problem focuses on determining mean velocity and temperature in laminar flow, while the third problem requires deriving a differential equation for temperature distribution in a fin surrounding a tube.

Advanced Heat Transfer

Midterm Exam, 29 Day 1400

Department of Chemical Engineering, Shiraz University

(1) A 2-mm-diameter and 10-m-long electric wire is tightly wrapped with a 1-mm-
thick plastic cover whose thermal conductivity is k=0.15 W/m.K. Electrical
measurements indicate that a current of 10 A passes through the wire and there is a
voltage drop of 8 V along the wire. If the insulated wire is exposed to a medium at
Tf= 30°C with a heat transfer coefficient of h=24 W/m2.K, determine the temperature
at the interface of the wire and the plastic cover in steady operation. Also determine
if doubling the thickness of the plastic cover will increase or decrease this interface
temperature.

(2) At a particular axial station, velocity and temperature profiles for laminar flow
in a parallel plate channel have the form

with units of m/s and °C, respectively.

Determine corresponding values of the mean velocity, 𝑢𝑚 , and mean (or bulk)
temperature, 𝑇𝑚 . Plot the velocity and temperature distributions. Do your values of
um and Tm appear reasonable?
(3) A circumferential fin of rectangular profile with thermal conductivity of k
surrounds a tube with radius R1. The fin length and thickness are L and t,
respectively. The tube wall temperature is TW, and the fin is exposed to a fluid at
temperature Tf and the convection heat transfer coefficient is h. (a) DERIVE the
differential equation representing the temperature profile along the fin (Do Not
Solve!). (b) What are the boundary conditions?
