1 Explain the design procedure. I - 2-4,
II-2 to 3
2 Define factor of safety and write formula to calculate it along with meaning of I - 11-15,
each term. II-77-79
3 Write short note on the factors affecting selection of factor of safety.
4 Define service factor I - 16-17
5 Design and draw a cotter joint to support a load varying from 20 kN in I- 44-46
compression to 20 kN in tension. The material used is carbon steel for which the III - 456
following allowable stresses may be used. The load is applied statically. Tensile
stress = compressive stress = 60 MPa ; shear stress = 35 MPa and crushing stress
= 100 MPa.
6 Design a socket and spigot cotter joint on which a load of 100KN is acting. For Practice
the material the allowable tensile stress is 120 MPa, Allowable crushing stress is
160MPa and Allowable shear stress is 80 MPa
7 Two rods are connected by means of a knuckle joint. The axial force P acting on I – 50-73,
the rods is 25 kN. The rods and the pin are made of plain carbon steel 45C8 (Syt II - 163
= 380 N/mm) and the factor of safety is 2.5. The yield strength in shear is 57.7%
of the yield strength in tension. Calculate: (i) the diameter of the rods, and (ii) the
diameter of the pin.
8 A handle for turning the spindle of a large valve is shown in Fig. The length of the III- 583
handle from the centre of the spindle is 500 mm. The handle is attached to the
spindle by means of a round tapered pin.

9 A vertical lever PQR, 18 mm thick is attached by a fulcrum pin at R and to a III- 566
horizontal rod at Q, as shown in Fig. An operating force of 800 N is applied
horizontally at P. Find :
1. Reactions at Q and R,
2. Tensile stress in 10 mm diameter tie rod at Q
3. Shear stress in 10 mm diameter pins at P, Q and R, and
4. Bearing stress on the lever at Q.
10 A foot lever is 1 m from the centre of shaft to the point of application of 800 N I-92-98
load. Find : III - 566
1. Diameter of the shaft,
2. Dimensions of the key, and
3. Dimensions of rectangular arm of the foot lever at 60 mm from the centre of
shaft assuming width of the arm as 3 times thickness.
The allowable tensile stress may be taken as 73 MPa and allowable shear stress
as 70 MPa.
11 Design a right-angled bell crank lever. The horizontal arm is 150 mm long and a I-74-91
load of 4. 5 kN acts vertically downward through a pin in the forked end of this II – 123
arm. At the end of the 500 mm long arm which is perpendicular to the 150 mm III - 576
short arm. The lever consists of forged steel material and a pin at the fulcrum.
Take the following data for both the pins and lever material: Safe stress in tension
= 75 Mpa Safe stress in shear = 60 Mpa Safe bearing pressure on pins = 10 MPa.
15 An offset bar is loaded as shown in figure. The weight of the bar is neglected. Practice
What is the maximum offset (dimension ‘x’), if allowable stress in tension is
limited to 70MPa. Where max stress will occur?
How to read reference : first letter is the reference number. The number mentioned after
reference is the slide number in case for reference (I) and page number for reference (II) and (III).
