Karpoori Thakur:
❖ Karpoori Thakur, widely known as "Jan Nayak," held the position of
Bihar's 11th Chief Minister twice, serving from 1970-71 and
1977-79.
❖ Posthumously, he will be honored with the Bharat Ratna. Notably,
Thakur played a pioneering role in introducing reservations for
Other Backward Classes (OBCs) based on the Mungeri Lal
Commission's recommendations during his tenure from 1977 to
1979.

❖ In 1978, he implemented a groundbreaking reservation model, allocating 26% of


reservations with specific quotas for OBCs, Economically Backward Classes (EBCs),
women, and economically disadvantaged sections among upper castes.
❖ Thakur was a strong advocate for the rights of marginalized communities, focusing
on social justice and inclusive development.
Mankombu Sambasivan (MS) Swaminathan:
❖ MS Swaminathan, acclaimed as the 'Father of India’s Green Revolution,'
will be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna.
❖ His contributions to Indian agriculture were monumental, co-developing
high-yielding wheat and rice varieties with Norman Borlaug in the
1960s and '70s.
❖ Swaminathan actively advocated for fair prices for agricultural produce, and
sustainable farming practices, and led the National Commission of Farmers.
❖ He played a pivotal role in shaping the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers'
Rights Act, of 2001.
❖ M.S Swaminathan received prestigious awards, including the Shanti Swarup
Bhatnagar Award (1961), the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1971), and the Albert
Einstein World Science Award (1986).
❖ He was also honored with the Padma Shri (1967), Padma Bhushan (1972), and
Padma Vibhushan (1989).
Pamulaparthi Venkata (P. V.) Narasimha Rao:
❖ P. V. Narasimha Rao, the 9th Prime Minister of India (1991-1996), will be
posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna.
❖ As Prime Minister, Rao reshaped India’s foreign policy, fostering relations with the
United States and establishing ties with Israel.
❖ He safeguarded national independence, particularly in maintaining
India’s nuclear strategy.
❖ Rao's tenure marked a period of economic liberalization and
resurgence with the LPG reforms of 1991, which opened up the economy to
globalization, reduced trade barriers, and initiated privatization.
❖ He published 'SahasraPhan,' a Hindi translation of the famous Telugu novel 'Veyi
Padagalu.' The 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments Acts, enacting

reservations for women in Panchayati Raj institutions and urban local bodies,
occurred during his tenure.

❖ Lal Krishna Advani, the 7th Deputy Prime Minister of India (1999-
2004) and long-serving President of the Bharatiya Janata Party is
recognized for his intellectual prowess, unwavering principles, and strong
support for a robust and prosperous India.
Chaudhary Charan Singh:
❖ Chaudhary Charan Singh, a prominent Indian politician and freedom
fighter, served as the 5th Prime Minister of India and Chief Minister of
Uttar Pradesh.
❖ In 1952, as the agriculture minister, he led Uttar Pradesh in abolishing
the zamindari system.
❖ Singh staunchly advocated for peasants' interests, introducing measures
to improve their conditions and welfare.
❖ Committed to the values of democracy, secularism, and social justice, he followed
Mahatma Gandhi's path of non-violent struggle for independence and faced
imprisonment multiple times.
