Mean, Median & Mode

Measures of central tendency summarize a dataset's typical value, with the main types being mean, median, and mode. The mean is the average, sensitive to outliers; the median is the middle value, effective for skewed data; and the mode is the most frequently occurring value. The document also provides examples and calculations for finding the mean and median from both ungrouped and grouped data.

Measures of Central Tendency

Measures of central tendency are statistics that describe the central or typical value of a set of data. They provide a single value that
represents the middle or average of a dataset. In statistics, there are three main measures of central tendency: mean, median, and mode.
Mean
The mean, also known as the average, is the sum of all values in a dataset divided by the number of values. It is sensitive to extreme values
in the dataset and is often affected by outliers.
Median
The median is the middle value in a dataset when it is arranged in order. It is a better measure of central tendency when the dataset contains
outliers or skewed data.
Mode
The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset. It is the most common value in the dataset.

Consider the following set of test scores:

85,90,76,88,92,79,84,91,77,8585, 90, 76, 88, 92, 79, 84, 91, 77, 8585,90,76,88,92,79,84,91,77,85

Calculate the mean of these test scores.

Mean=847/10=84.7

Consider the following frequency distribution of test scores:
