Literary Devices

“Sonnet 43” is full of literary devices. Literary devices are techniques that poets and writers use to add color, shades of
meaning, and creativity in their writing. There are many literary devices which a few are relevant to understanding of a
poem: imagery, metaphor, symbolism, alliteration, and assonance.

1. Imagery—refers to words that appeal to the senses, emotions, and feelings.

Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.

2. Metaphor—makes comparison between two things to show they are identical

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

3. Symbolism—uses symbol, anything that represents a deeper meaning beyond the literal, to represent ideas
…I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!..

4. Alliteration—shows repetition of initial consonant sounds of nearby words.

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use

5. Assonance—shows repetition of vowel sounds of nearby words.

I love thee freely, as men strive for Right

Imagery was shown in the poem when instead of saying that the persona loves the beloved day and night, the persona
used “sun” and “candlelight”.
Metaphor is present by directly comparing the persona’s love to a concrete object with dimensions (depth, breadth, and
height) and giving to this love which, as it is an abstract concept, cannot be measured.
The “breadth, smiles, tears”, are symbols of the persona’s joys, sorrows, and whole life. Adding to overall effect of the
persona’s declaration of love are sound devices alliteration and assonance which give the poem strength and melody.

Task 1. Fill out the table below with lines from Browning’s “Sonnet 44” showing the given literary devices.
