Question Paper

The document outlines a comprehensive examination for Aerospace Engineering students, covering topics such as elimination of systems of equations, diagonalization of matrices, solving differential equations, Fourier series, heat equations, finding roots of polynomials, and evaluating integrals using numerical methods. Each question requires specific mathematical techniques and problem-solving skills relevant to aerospace engineering. The examination tests both theoretical understanding and practical application of mathematical concepts.

Mathematics for Aerospace Engineers

Comprehensive Examination

1. Apply elimination to the system

𝑢 + 2𝑣 + 𝑤 = 2
𝑢 + 2𝑣 + 2𝑤 = 4
3𝑢 + 4𝑣 − 𝑤 = −3

Write all matrices needed in the elimination. b) Is there any solution? What are they? c) What is (are) the
corresponding column picture(s)? d) What coefficient of 𝑤 in the second equation, in place of the
present 2, would make it impossible to proceed and force elimination to break down? (d) Write the
coefficient matrix of the system in Q. 1 in LDU form, if you can.

2. Write the matrix 𝐴 = [0 −2 0] in the diagonalized form 𝐴 = 𝑆Λ𝑆 −1 .
1 −1 −1

3. (a) Solve: 𝑦 " − 2𝑦 ′ − 3𝑦 = 64𝑥𝑒 −𝑥 .

𝑥
(b) Solve the integral equation using Laplace transform: 𝑦(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + ∫0 sin(𝑥 − 𝑡) 𝑦(𝑡) 𝑑𝑡.

4. For the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝜋 − 𝑥 find its Fourier series on the interval – 𝜋 < 𝑥 < 𝜋.

5. Solve the one-dimensional heat equation 𝑎2 2 = subject to the set of conditions: The rod is 𝜋

units long and lies along the x-axis between x=0 and 𝑥 = 𝜋; the initial temperature is a prescribed
function 𝑓(𝑥) , so that 𝑇(𝑥, 0) = 𝑓(𝑥); and the ends of the rod have the constant temperature zero for
all values of 𝑡 ≥ 0.

6. Find the roots of equation 𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 2 + 1.01𝑥 + 1.88 = 0 by Newton’s method and Secant Method.

7. Evaluate 𝐽 = ∫0 𝑒 −𝑥 𝑑𝑥 with n=2m=10. Use Trapezoidal rule and Simpson’s rule.
