Question Paper

The document outlines various engineering problems related to dynamics and vibrations, including the derivation of equations of motion for different mechanical systems, determination of natural frequencies, and analysis of responses to external loads. It covers scenarios involving springs, dampers, rigid links, and beams, providing specific parameters for calculations. The problems also explore concepts such as elastic collisions, underdamped systems, and the effects of mass distribution on vibration characteristics.

1. Derive the equation of motion of the following system.

2. Four weightless rigid links and a spring are arranged to support a weight W, as shown below.
Determine the natural frequency of vibration for the arrangement.

3. A bronze ball of mass m0 is dropped on the mass of an SDOF system from a height h as shown
below. If the ball is caught after its first bounce, determine the resulting displacement response
of the mass M. Assume that the collision is perfectly elastic and the system is at rest initially.
Data: M = 2 kg, m0 = 0.1 kg, k = 100 N/m, c = 5 N-s/m, and h = 2 m.
4. The landing gear of an airplane can be idealized as the spring-mass-damper system, as shown
below. If the runway surface is given by y(t) = y0 cos(ωt), then determine the values of k and c
that limit the amplitude of vibration of the airplane (x) to 0.1 m. Assume m = 2000 kg, y0 = 0.2
m, and ω = 157.08 rad/s.

5. The L-shaped frame shown below is fixed at the end A and free at end C. The two segments of
the frame, AB and BC, are made of the same material with identical square cross sections.
Indicate a procedure for finding the natural frequencies of in-plane vibration of the frame by
treating the two segments as beams.
6. A four-story building has floor masses as shown below, where m = 10,000 kg. The stiffness of
the stories are unknown, but a test is performed in which the first two natural frequencies and
mode shapes are identified as: ω1 = 1 rad/s; {ϕ1} = {1 2 3 4}T; ω2 = 2 rad/s; and {ϕ2} = {1 1 0
–1}T. Now suppose another test is performed, where the building is subjected to the loads F(t)
as shown in the figure (same F(t) at all floors), where F(t) is a step load with magnitude F0. If
a record of the building response in this test shows that the displacement x1(t = π) is equal to
0.05 m, then estimate the corresponding value of F0, assuming the system response is governed
by the first two modes only.

7. Derive the equation of motion for the system shown below, with the velocity v(t) of the mass
as the degree of freedom. What will be the equation of motion with the displacement x(t) of
the mass as the degree of freedom? What will be the natural frequency ωn and damping ratio ζ
of the system? What will be the critical damping? If the positions of the spring and damper are
interchanged, how will your results change? Ho do your results compare with the case when
the spring and damper are in parallel?
8. Let g(t) be the response of an underdamped system to a unit step function and h(t) be its
response to the unit impulse function. Show that h(t) = dg/dt. Show further that the convolution
integral (Duhamel’s integral) can be expressed as:

𝑡𝑡
d𝐹𝐹 (𝜏𝜏)
𝑥𝑥(𝑡𝑡) = 𝐹𝐹0 ℎ(𝑡𝑡) + ℎ(𝑡𝑡 − 𝜏𝜏)d𝜏𝜏
0 d𝜏𝜏

9. Consider a cantilever beam of length L. Let x be the distance along the beam from the left
support. From x = 0 to x = L/2, the beam has a mass density of ρ1, and modulus of elasticity
E1. From x = L/2 to x = L, the beam is rigid, with infinite modulus of elasticity, and with mass
density ρ2. The beam has a uniform cross-section, with area A and moment of inertia I. The
rigid part of the beam rests on a bed of springs with stiffness kb per unit length. Find the
governing differential equation of motion for free vibration of the beam. Also find its
fundamental frequency and mode shape.

10. Derive the equations of motion for the system shown below, assuming small θ.
