Tutorial 5 : Time Response analysis

Q1. The overall transfer function of a second order control system is given by

𝐶(𝑠) 2
= 2
𝑅(𝑠) 𝑆 + 3𝑆 + 2

What will be the time response of this system, when subjected to a unit step response .

Ans 𝟏 − 𝒆−𝟐𝒕 + 𝒆−𝒕

Q2. For a unit step input, a system with forward path transfer function

20
𝐺(𝑆) =
𝑠2

and feedback path transfer function H(s) = (s+5), what is the steady state output.

Ans. (0.2)

Q3. The transfer function of a system is

1
1 + 𝑠𝑇

The input to this system is the ramp-function tu(t). The output would track this system with an
error. Find the error.

Ans. (T)

Q4. The unit impulse response of a system is given as

𝐶(𝑡) = −4𝑒 −𝑡 + 6𝑒 −2𝑡

What will be the step response of the same system for 𝑡 ≥ 0.

Ans. −𝟑𝒆−𝟐𝒕 + 𝟒−𝒕 − 𝟏

Q5. The current is given by

𝐼(𝑠) = (𝑠 + 2)(𝑠 + 4)/𝑠((𝑠 + 1)(𝑠 + 𝐾)) .

If the steady-state current at t = ∞ is 12A. Find the value of K and initial value of current.

Ans. (0.66 And 1A)

6. A unity feedback system with open loop transfer function of 20/S(S+5) is excited by a unit
step input. How much time will be required for the response to settle within 2% of final desired
value?Ans. (1.60sec)

Q1. For a second order under damped system, subjected to unit- step input, the time

response shows first peak to be four times of the second overshoot. Determine the

damping factor of the system and expected maximum overshoot. Ans(0.087 and 76%)

Q2. For a system represented by a block diagram shown below, calculate the closed loop
transfer function. Calculate damping factor, frequency of oscillation if any, steady state
error if the input is unit ramp in θr.Ans. (0.578,4.71rad/s,error=0.22)

θr -
+- 5 + θ
1/(0.15S+1)S

Q3. The block Diagram of unity feedback control system is given below

R(s) C(S)
+- K/S(S+P)

The parameters
K and P are both greater than zero. Determine the values of ‘K’ and ‘P’ to satisfy
following frequency domain specifications:
Resonant Peak Mp = 1.04
Resonant Frequency = 11.55 rad/se. Ans. (K=484 and P=26.4)

function of a second order prototype system to model the system

𝟑𝟒𝟐.𝟕𝟕𝟐
Ans. ( )
𝒔𝟐 +𝟐𝟕𝟒.𝟐𝒔+𝟑𝟒𝟐.𝟕𝟕𝟐

Q5. The transient response of a second order system when subjected to unit step input is
𝜋
found to have peak overshoot of 16.2 per cent, occurring at a time 𝑡 = seconds.
5(𝑆𝑞𝑟𝑡(3))

If this system is subjected to a sinusoidal input of 1 volt, determine (i) frequency of input
at which amplitude of steady state response will have maximum value, (ii) maximum
value of steady state output.Ans( I -10 rad/sec, I I - 1.155 )

feedback when the input is given by 𝑟0 + 𝑟1𝑡 + 𝑟2𝑡 2 .
