Luke 1:39-45)

- Soon afterward Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in in the hill country of Judea

- She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth

- When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greetings, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled
with the holy spirit

- And said in a loud voice, you are the most blessed of all women and blessed is that child you
will bear

- Why should this great thing happen to me, that my lord’s mother comes to visit me?

- For as soon as I heard your greetings. The baby within me jumped with gladness

- How happy you are to believe that the lord’s message to you will come true!

(b) State two points why God chose Mary and Elizabeth to fulfil his

2. (a) Relate the story of the imprisonment and the death of John the Baptist. [5]

Mark 6:17-22

- Herod himself had ordered john’s arrest, and he had him tied up and put in prison.
Herod did this because of Herodias, whom he had married, even though she was the
wife of his brother Phillip.
- John the Baptist kept telling Herod, it isn’t right for you to marry your brother’s wife.
- So Herodias held a grudge against john and wanted to kill him, but she could not
because of Herod.
- Herod was afraid of john because he knew that John was a good and holy man, and so
he kept him safe. He liked to listen to him, even though he became greatly disturbed
every time he heard him.
- Finally Herodias got her chance. It was on Herod’s birthday, when he gave a feast
for all the top government officials, the military chiefs, and the leading citizens of
Galilee.
- The daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and please Herod and his guests. So
the king said to the girl, what would you like to have? I will give you anything you
want.
- With many vows he said to her, I swear that I will give you anything you ask for,
even as much as half my kingdom!
- So the girl went out and asked her mother, what shall I ask for? The head of John the
Baptist, she answered.
- The girl hurried back at once to the king and demanded, I want you to give me here
and now the head of John the Baptist on a plate!
- This made the king very sad, but he could not refuse her because of the vows he had
made in front of his entire guest.
- So he sent off a guard at once with orders to bring john’s head. The guard left, went
to the prison, and cut John’s head off;
- Then he brought it on a place and gave it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.
- When john’s disciples heard about this, they came and got his body and buried it.

(b) In what ways was the work of Jesus different form that of John the Baptist?

- John challenged people to repent but not forgive sins while jesus as the son of God could
forgive sin when people repented

- John baptized people with water as a sign of repentance in preparation for the coming of Jesus
while Jesus would baptize those who repented with the power of the Holy Spirit, to help them
live their lives to please God.

- John the Baptist could not cast out demons but Jesus did so

- John did not heal the sick but Jesus healed the sick

3. (a) Relate the story of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist [5]

Mathew 3:13 – 17

- At that time jesus arrived from Galilee

- And came to john at the Jordan to be baptized by him.

- But john tried to make him change his mind

- “I ought to be baptized by you,” John said, “and yet you have come to me!”

- But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now.

- For in this way we shall do all that God requires,” so john agreed.

- As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water.

- Then heaven was opened to him and he saw the spirit of God coming down life a dove and
lighting on him

- Then a voice said form heaven,

- This is my own dear son, with whom I am pleased.”

4. (a) Tell the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand people [5]

Luke 9:12-17

- When the sun was beginning to set, the twelve disciples came to him and said,
- Send the people away so that they can go to the villages and farms around here and find food
and lodging, because this is a lonely place

-But Jesus said to them, you have five loaves and two fish.”

-They answered; you yourselves give them something to eat.”

-They answered; all we have are five loaves and two fish.”

-Do you want us to go and buy food for this whole crowd?

(There were about five thousand men there.)

- Jesus said to his disciples,

-“Make the people sit down in groups of about fifty each.”

- After the disciples had done so,

- Jesus took the five loaves and to fish, looked up to heaven, thanked God for them,

- broke them, and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people

- They all ate and had enough.

5. (a) Describe the story of the rich man and Lazarus [5]

Luke 16:19 – 30

- Here was once a rich man who dressed in the most expensive clothes and lived in great
luxury every day

- There was also a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who used to be brought to the
rich man’s door,

- Hopping to eat the bits of food that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs would come
and lick his sores.

- The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the feast in heaven.
The rich man died and was buried. And in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up
and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side.

- So he called out, father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in
some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this fire!

- But Abraham said, remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the good
things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself here, while you
are in pain.

- Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over
from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from where you are.

- The rich man said, and then I beg you, father Abraham; send Lazarus to my father’s house.

- Where I have five brothers, let them go and warn them so that they, at least, will come to this
place of pain.

- Abraham said your brothers have Moses and the prophets to warn them; your brothers should
listen to what they say.

- The rich man answered. That is not enough, father Abraham! But if someone were to rise
from death and go to them, then they would turn from their sins.

- But Abraham said, if they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be
convinced even if someone were to rise from death.

6 (a). Narrate the story of the transfiguration of Jesus

- About a week after he had said these things, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him
and went up a hill to pray.
- While he was praying, his face changed its appearance, and his clothes became dazzling
white.
- Suddenly two men were there talking with him
- They were Moses and Elijah
- Who appeared in heavenly glory and talked with Jesus about the way in which he would
soon fulfil God’s purpose by dying in Jerusalem.
- Peter and his companions were sound asleep,
- But they woke up and saw Jesus’ glory and the two men who were standing with him.
- As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, Master, how good it is that we are here!
- We will make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah
- (He did not really know what he was saying.)
- While he was still speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them with its shadow;
- And the disciples were afraid as the cloud came over them.
- A voice said from the cloud,
- This is my Son, whom I have chosen listen to him!
- When the voice stopped, there was Jesus all alone.
- The disciples kept quiet about all this and told no one at that time anything they had seen.

Hinduism - suffering is a way to measure one’s strength of mind and soul.

Christianity - all Christians suffer at times it does not depend on the amount of holiness

but God gives strength to endure it.

7 (a) Tell the story of the burial of Jesus

Luke 23:50 – 56
- There was a man named Joseph from Arinathea, a town in Judea,
- He was a good and honourable man, who was waiting for the coming of the
kingdom of God.
- Although he was a member of the council, he had not agreed with their decision
and action.
- He went into the presence of Pilate and
- asked for the body of Jesus
- then took the body down, wrapped it in a linen sheet, - placed
- it in a tomb which had been dug out of solid rock and which had never been
used.
- It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin
- The women who had followed Jesus from Galilee went with Joseph
- And saw the tomb and how Jesus’ body was placed in it.
- Then they went back home and prepared the spices and perfumes for the body
- On the Sabbath they relaxed as the law commanded.

- Sometime later the widow’s son got sick; he got worse and worse, and finally he died.
- She said to Elijah, man of god, why did you do this to me?
- Did you come here to remind God of my sins and so cause my son’s death?
- Give the boy to me, Elijah said.
- He took the boy from her arms, carried him upstairs to the room where he was staying,
and laid him on the bed.
- Then he prayed aloud, O LORD my God, why have you done such a terrible thing to this
widow?
- She has been kind enough to take care of me, and now you kill her son!
- Then Elijah stretched himself out on the boy three times and prayed
- O LORD my God, restore this child to life!
- The LORD answered Elijah’s prayer; the child started breathing again and revived.
- Elijah too the boy back down stairs to his mother and said to her, look, your son is alive!
- She answered, now I know that you a man of God and that the LORD really speaks

9 (a) Relate an account of peter’s vision and the roman officer’s household [5]

(Acts 10 9-23)

- The next day, as they were on their way and coming near Joppa, peter went up on
the roof of the house about noon in order to pray,

- He became hunger and wanted something to eat;

- While the food was being prepared, he had a vision

- He saw heaven opened and something coming down that looked like a large
sheet

- Being lowered by its four corners to the earth

- In it were all kinds of animals, reptiles, and wild birds

- A voice said to him, get up, peter, kill and eat!

- But peter said, certainly not, lord! I have never eaten anything ritually unclean or
defiled.

- The voice spoke to him again, do not consider anything unclean that God has
declared clean.

- This happened three times, and then the thing was taken back up in heaven.

- While peter was wondering about the meaning of this vision, the men sent by
Cornelius had learned where Simon’s house was, and they were now standing in
front of the gate.

- They called out and asked, it there a guest here by the name of Simon peter?

- Peter was still trying to understand what the vision meant, when the Spirit said,
Listen! Three men are here looking for you

- So get ready and go down, and do not hesitate to go with them, have sent them.

- So Peter went down and said to the men, I am the man you are looking for. Why
have you come?

- Captain Cornelius sent us, they answered. He is a good man who worships God
and is highly respected by all the Jewish people. An angel of God told him to
invite you to his house, so that he could hear what you have to say.

- Peter invited the men in and had them spend the night there. The next day he

got ready and went with them; and some of the believers from Joppa went

along with him.

Non-Jews in the church. [4]

10 (a) Give an account of the story of Ananias and Sapphira [5]

Acts 5:11-11

- But there was a man named Ananias, who with his wife sapphire sold some property that
belonged to them.

- But with his wife’s agreement he kept part of the money for himself and turned the rest over
to the apostles

- Peter said to him, Ananias, why did you let Satan take control of you and make you lie to the
Holy Spirit by keeping part of the money you received for the property?

- Before you sold the property, it belonged to you: and after you sold it, the money was yours.
Why, then, did you decide to do such a thing? You have not lied to people – you have lied to
God!

- As soon as Ananias heard this, he fell down dead; and all who heard about it were terrified.

- The young men came in, wrapped up his body, carried him out, and buried him.

- About three hours later his wife, not knowing what had happened came in

- Peter asked her, tell me, was this the full amount you and your husband received for your
property? Yes, she answered, the full amount.

- So peter said to her, why did you and your husband decide to put the Lord’s Spirit to the test?
The men who buried your husband are at the door right now, and they will carry you out too!

- At once she fell down at his feet and died. The young men came in and saw that she was
dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

- The whole church and all the others who heard of this were terrified.
