A SECOND CHANCE? When the famous pioneer missionary, David Livingstone tried to preach his rst sermon, his mind went blank. Humiliated he told the congregation, I have forgotten all that I had to say. He left the church that day determined never to preach again. But through the encouragement of a godly missionary, Robert Moffat, Livingstone tried again. He went on to be an accomplished preacher and doctor. The life of God!s people is often characterized by multiple failures. Often this happens at the beginning of our Christian service. Many a young person faced initial discouragement and failure, who later became a mighty man or woman for God. EXAMPLE OF FAILURE A young man who failed in the early part of his ministry was John Mark. In the Book of Acts he accompanied Paul and Barnabas when they started on their rst missionary journey (Acts 13:5). He is described as their minister or assistant on this trip. However, he soon departed from them and returned home to Jerusalem (Acts 13:13). We are not explicitly told the reasons why John Mark went back. He does not appear to have had a good reason. Clearly Paul was not impressed as in Acts 15:38 we are told, Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. The great apostle had no stomach for uncommitted men. " Now, later John Mark must have regretted his action because in Acts 15 he wanted to rejoin Paul and Barnabas on a new trip. Barnabas wanted to take him, but Paul refused. This dispute led to a parting of the ways with Paul taking Silas with him and traveling through Syria and Cilicia whereas Barnabas headed to Cyprus with John Mark (15:39). RECOVERY FROM FAILURE The failure of John Mark was not permanent. The time he spent under the encouraging mentoring of his uncle, Barnabas was clearly benecial. He learned from his mistake and became a mighty man of

Boars In God's Vineyard (Romans 16:17-20) The Apostle Paul in Romans 16:1-16 gave a wonderful example of extending Christian love and fellowship to fellow saints. However, in v17-20 he reminds the believers at Rome that not everyone is to be welcomed. Counterfeit believers and false teachers are to be separated from. Paul!s love for the saints at Rome causes him to protect them from false and divisive persons. These persons distort and contradict the faith he has taught them in this epistle. He describes carefully such persons in term of their: (1) MANNER (2) MOTIVE (3) METHOD

2012 Theme: Service Of A Disciple to the great apostle. So much so that Paul wants to have him near him as he is protable to me. " You may have failed the Lord like Moses, Peter, and John Mark at the beginning of your ministry. Maybe you wonder if God will ever use you again in His service. But God is the God of second chances. Imperfect people are excellent candidates for the grace of God. The Bible offers hope for those who have failed God. Our failures are never nal if we begin again with God. Seek forgiveness and learn from it. Now, if God has forgiven you, then don!t live on the guilt of the past. Erwin Lutzer put it well, God is able to forget our past. Why can!t we? He throws our sins into the depths of the sea and puts up a sign on the shore which reads, #No shing.! Your failure doesn!t have to be the nal epitaph of your life. It can simply be an event of life; not your nal destiny. God often uses broken people to accomplish great things. He is the expert at taking what is broken and putting it back together again. The Lord even used men like Moses, John Mark, and Simon Peter more after their great failures than before. That is another reason why we are amazed about the amazing grace of God! In Christ Pastor Paul When through ery trials thy pathways shall lie, My grace, all sufcient, shall be thy supply; The ame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to rene.
God. The Apostle Paul recognized the maturing in him (cf. Col. 4:10). At the end of Paul!s life, when so many had forsaken him, he wrote to Timothy, Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is protable to me for the ministry (2 Timothy 4:11). The young man who had let Paul down previously had now become protable. The Greek word has the idea of useful or benecial special service. The great apostle paid a glowing tribute to the blessing this man was in Paul!s life, protable to me for the ministry. It is this type of man that Paul wants to be with him as he faces the end of life in Rome. What a turnaround in John Mark!s life. Church tradition strongly indicates that John Mark wrote the Gospel according to Mark under the guidance of another mentor, Simon Peter. Here were two men who had previously failed being used of God in a mighty way. God often takes those who have failed greatly and moulds them into protable trophies of grace. CONCLUSION If you!ve never failed God, this article is not for you. Failure does not have to be the nal end point in a man!s life. God does not overlook it, but we can learn from it. Simon Peter had to repent in bitter tears but he emerged a greater instrument in God!s service at Pentecost. John Mark could not erase the tape of his failure but he could learn and grow from it. He could have retired from the ministry or have been bitter with Paul for humiliating him. Instead, he shows his maturity in working to be a blessing

OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD The mother was carrying her 2-year old son. Both were dressed in their Chinese New Year best. The mother spoke on her hand phone Sure, we!ll wait here for you at the bus stop to pick us up. The little boy heard it and started kicking up a fuss. The mother told him Your aunt will fetch us in a moment. The boy screamed at his mother and pointed to the approaching bus as if to say No, I want to take the bus! The mother called the aunt on the phone, I!m so sorry, you don!t need to come; he wants to take the bus. Children, have you behaved like this boy before? It may look cute if done once but is that acceptable? If it is done often it won!t be good for both parent and child because there will be a constant power struggle. I think we have all been guilty at one time or other. When we don!t get our way, we show our unhappiness or anger. Some children throw tantrum in public place because they do not get what they want. God has put your parents in charge of you. Imagine what happen when you disobey them. Father asks you to gather for family worship but you don!t want to. Mother tells you to tidy the room and you answer soon but days later, you still haven!t done so. Obedience is the best way to honour your parents. If you follow God!s ways, you will receive God!s blessings. It is likely that children who refuse to listen to their parents at home will also refuse to listen to the teacher in class. What does God!s Word say? Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Obey your teachers even when you don!t feel like it. Can you disagree with them? Yes but you should learn to speak politely so that they can hear what you are saying. If they still say No, then what? Must you obey them? Yes but you may also want to talk to your parents or other teachers to understand the situation better. Obedience to those in authority over you is right in the sight of the Lord. God has given you parents and teachers to protect and guide you. You do well to pray for them and for yourselves to do what is right in the sight of God. Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the rst commandment with promise) that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Excerpts from Dr Tow!s Chat 26 February 2012 The Writing is on the Wall The gay tide is sweeping the Earth. The powers that be are in cahoots, and the rest of the world, willing or not, follows. The United States are pro gay. President Obama has said so and Mrs Hillary Clinton made this statement (of US policy) at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva (ST 8 December 2011). Days of Lot are on the way Readers may be wondering, How are you so sure the move to establish gay rights at the global level will succeed? When I wrote The writing is on the wall, it was on good grounds.$ The US has been patently in favour of homosexuality since the mid 20th Century. Leading personalities and Hollywood stars (Elizabeth Taylor and others) have been openly pro gay. What must we do? The gay movement will succeed. The days of Lot will be ushered in sooner than you think, Singapore following! What must Bible-believing Christians do? I quote from Apostle Pauls second letter to the Thessalonian Christians: Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace (2 Thess 2:15-16) A last word to those who will hear Powers come and powers go: history tells us so. one POWER over all. Men ignore it to their own peril. Men (and women) of power are mere transients: they are here today, gone tomorrow. But the Creator rules for endless days, over all. He, and He alone, has all power. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained re and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed (Luke 17:28-30). The Lord, our Creator, is patient and longsuffering until Judgment Day. That Day is on the way!
