Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Distracted by talent.
Let’s define talent and effort first. Talent, in general sense, is a person’s skills,
intelligence, efficiency and inborn gifts. And effort is an attempt, struggle, aim and
a firm resolution to achieve a goal.
In this chapter, talent and effort are compared with each other. Most of us think
that achievements are gained through talent. Success of a person is totally based
on his or her talent and intelligence. People with high levels of IQ can perform in
an excellent way. But what about the ones who make extreme efforts to reach
their goals, who try their most to gain achievements and rewards. Which
achievement would be of more worth: the one which is gained through
intelligence that is blessed or the one which is gained through consistent effort?
The idea presented here is that the only talent does not decides our future- the
bright future. If we consider two persons, the one who has many degrees,
medals, prizes and rewards achieved on the basis of his or her talent and the
other one who has strived a lot to make his or her dreams a reality: whose
success would matter as both have equally reached the highest degrees of
triumph. I am not trying to convince that talent is nothing but effort- both are
equally important; talent as well as effort. However, effort is more valuable and is
worthy. The determinism, zeal and struggle, which make the striver to develop
grit- are more valuable.
What would you say about the student who is much intelligent and efficient in
mathematics, who solves storming questions within in a few moments who is
always expected to mark highest scores in his exams while on the other hand a
student who makes deliberate efforts to get through geometrical or algebraic
concepts and is expected to mark average in his exams. But the result comes
opposite when the score board is revealed. The striver marks higher grades than
the talented one. Now consider here that what takes the striver to that highest
level, surely, the zeal, diligence, determinism and effort- the grit.
In the next chapter, both concepts; talent and effort are discussed more
elaborately.
