Detailed Lesson Plan: Solving Literal Equations

**Grade Level:** 7 (Matatag)

**Subject:** Mathematics

**Lesson Duration:** 45 minutes

**Learning Competency:** Solve problems involving literal equations (M7AL-Ie-3)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Define and identify literal equations.

2. Solve literal equations for a specified variable using inverse operations.

3. Apply their understanding of literal equations in real-life situations.

II. Materials
- Whiteboard and markers

- Printed worksheets and activity sheets

- Small whiteboards for students

- Flashcards with literal equations

- Real-life problem cards (word problems involving formulas)

III. Lesson Procedure (45 Minutes)

A. Introduction (5 minutes)
**Teacher’s Dialogue:**

"Good day, class! Before we start, let’s recall what we learned about equations. Can someone
tell me what an equation is?"

**Expected Student Response:**

"An equation is a mathematical statement that shows two expressions are equal!"

**Teacher’s Response:**

"Very good! Today, we will extend this knowledge by learning about literal equations. These
are equations that contain multiple variables, and we will learn how to solve for a specific
one. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to manipulate equations like a pro!"
B. Lesson Proper (15 minutes)
**Step 1: Definition and Explanation**

Teacher: "Literal equations are equations that have more than one variable. We solve them
by isolating a specific variable, just like solving regular equations."

**Example 1:** Solve for b in the equation A = bh (Area of a rectangle).

Teacher writes on the board: A = bh

Teacher: "We need to isolate b. What should we do first?"

Expected Student Response: "Divide both sides by h!"

Teacher: "Correct! Let’s do that."

A/h = bh/h

b = A/h

"Now, we have solved for b!"

**Step 2: Guided Practice**

Teacher writes on the board: C = 2πr (Circumference of a circle).

Teacher: "Who can help me solve for r?"

Expected Student Response: "Divide both sides by 2π!"

Teacher writes: r = C / 2π

Teacher: "Great job! Now, let’s practice together."

C. Interactive Activity (15 minutes)

**Group Challenge: "Equation Race!"**

1. Students are divided into small groups.

2. Each group receives an envelope with three literal equations.

3. Groups race to solve their equations and hold up their answers on a small whiteboard.

4. The first group to correctly solve all equations wins a reward!

**Example Problems:**

- Solve for t: d = rt (Distance formula)

- Solve for w: P = 2l + 2w (Perimeter of a rectangle)

Teacher monitors, encourages, and provides hints if necessary.

D. Application (5 minutes)
Teacher distributes real-life problem cards. Each student solves a problem involving a
literal equation. Examples include:

- Converting temperature: Solve for C in F = (9/5)C + 32

- Solving for time in d = rt

Students solve individually, then discuss in pairs.

E. Assessment (5 minutes)
Students complete a short quiz solving three literal equations.

F. Assignment
Research and bring two real-world formulas. Solve for a different variable in each.
