CHEM181 Tutorial 1

1. Properties of matter

1.1. Classify each of the following as either a pure substance or a mixture. Also, in the case of a
pure substance, state whether it’s an element or compound, and whether it is homogenous or
heterogenous for a mixture.
a) Sand
b) Methanol, CH3OH
c) Air
d) Iodine crystals

2. Scientific notation, significant figures and units

2.1. Determine the number of significant figures in each of the following measured quantities.
a) 9.6050 m
b) 100 L
c) 9.01 x 10-3 m3
d) 100.00 kg

2.2. Round off the following numbers to three significant figures and express the answer in scientific
notation.
a) 102.53070
b) 0.008543210

2.3. Perform the following calculations to the correct number of significant figures.
a) 7.73 mL + 0.230 mL + 3.451 mL =
b) 6.15 m x 4.1355 =

2.4. Complete the following conversions

a) 1.265 x 103 mg = g
b) 2.25 x 103 cm3 = L
c) 1.21 x 10-7 m = nm
3. Density

3.1. Determine the density of mercury in a thermometer if 31.2 g occupies 2.29 mL.

3.2. To determine the density of ethyl alcohol, a student pipettes a 5.00 mL sample into an empty
flask weighing 15.246 g. The flask with the sample has a total mass of 19.171 g. What is the
density of the ethyl alcohol?

3.3. Car batteries contain sulfuric acid, which is commonly referred to as “battery acid”. Calculate
the number of grams of sulfuric acid in 0.750 dm3 of battery acid if the solution has a density
of 1.28 g cm-3 and is 24.3% sulfuric acid by mass.
