To successfully complete your project—collecting data from sensors

and visualizing it in a control room using Microsoft Power BI—follow this

structured roadmap and consider the recommended equipment:

Roadmap

Phase 1: Planning and Requirements Gathering

1. Define Project Scope:

o Identify the specific sensors (e.g., temperature, pressure)

and data points to monitor.

o Determine the frequency of data collection and reporting.

2. Assess Infrastructure:

o Evaluate the installation environment for power availability

and GSM signal strength.

o Ensure the control room has the necessary hardware and

software to run Power BI.

Phase 2: Hardware Acquisition

1. Sensors:

o Select sensors compatible with RS485 or RS232 interfaces

for reliable data transmission.

2. Industrial Router:

o Choose a router capable of interfacing with sensors and

sending data via SMS.

3. GSM Modem for SMS Gateway:

o Acquire a GSM modem to receive SMS data from the router.

4. Server or PC:

o Prepare a machine to host the SMS gateway software and

database.

5. Power Supply and Cables:

o Ensure appropriate power supplies and communication
cables are available for all devices.

Phase 3: System Integration

1. Sensor Installation:

o Install sensors at designated locations and connect them to

the industrial router via RS485/RS232 interfaces.

2. Router Configuration:

o Configure the router to collect sensor data and send it as

SMS to the GSM modem's phone number.

3. SMS Gateway Setup:

o Install and configure SMS gateway software (e.g., Gammu

or Kannel) on the server connected to the GSM modem to
receive and process incoming SMS messages.

4. Data Processing:

o Develop scripts to parse SMS data and insert it into a

database (e.g., MySQL).

Phase 4: Data Visualization

1. Database Configuration:

o Set up the database to store processed sensor data.

2. Power BI Integration:

o Connect Microsoft Power BI to the database and create

dashboards to visualize sensor data in real-time.

Phase 5: Testing and Deployment

1. System Testing:

o Conduct end-to-end testing to ensure data flows correctly

from sensors to Power BI dashboards.
2. Deployment:

o Deploy the system in the operational environment and

monitor performance.

Recommended Equipment

Here are some recommended products to consider for your project:

capabilities, suitable for industrial applications.

Linovision

SIM800C USB GSM Modem

A cost-effective GSM modem compatible with SMS gateway software,
ideal for receiving SMS data.

Amazon

Siemens SITRANS P Pressure Sensor

A reliable pressure sensor with RS485 output, suitable for industrial
monitoring.
DHT22 Temperature and Humidity Sensor

Note: Ensure that all equipment is compatible with your specific
project requirements and regional standards. Always consult with
suppliers or manufacturers to confirm suitability for your application.

If the distance between the sensor installation site and the control
room is 164.70 km, direct communication via cables or standard
wireless technologies is not feasible. Instead, you will need to utilize
GSM or other long-range communication technologies to ensure data
transmission. Below is the revised plan for equipment placement and
data flow considering the long distance:

Equipment Installation Plan

1. Sensors (Pressure and Temperature Sensors)

 Location: At the field site (28.925963881610013,

19.744730010338227).

 Installation Notes:

o Mount the sensors securely at the wellhead.

o Connect the sensors to the industrial router using RS485 or

RS232 cables.

o Ensure the sensors are protected against environmental

factors (dust, heat, etc.).

2. IOT-R32 Industrial Router

 Location: At the field site, near the sensors.

 Reason:

o The router collects data directly from the sensors and

transmits it via GSM to the control room.

 Installation Notes:

o Insert a SIM card with GSM coverage for SMS or GPRS/4G

communication.

o Mount the router in a weatherproof enclosure.

o Use a reliable DC power source (e.g., solar panel with
battery backup if grid power is unavailable).

3. GSM Modem

 Location: In the control room.

 Reason:

o The GSM modem will receive SMS messages sent by the

router from the field site.

 Installation Notes:

o Install the GSM modem on a desk or rack in the control

room.

o Connect it to the SMS gateway server using USB or serial

cable.

o Attach an external antenna if GSM signal strength inside

the control room is weak.

4. SMS Gateway Server

 Location: In the control room.

 Reason:

o The server processes SMS messages from the GSM modem

and forwards the data to a database.

 Installation Notes:

o Use a PC or server to host the SMS gateway software (e.g.,

Gammu or Kannel).

o Connect the server to the GSM modem.

o Ensure the server is secured and has reliable power.

5. Database and Visualization Tools (Power BI Integration)

 Location: In the control room, on the same server hosting the
SMS gateway.

 Reason:

o Centralized storage and visualization simplify data

management.

 Installation Notes:

o Set up a database (e.g., MySQL or PostgreSQL) on the

server to store sensor data.

o Connect Microsoft Power BI to the database for real-time

data visualization.

Communication Workflow

1. Sensor → IOT-R32 Router (Field Site):

o Sensors transmit data to the router via RS485/RS232.

2. IOT-R32 Router → GSM Network (via SMS or GPRS):

o The router sends sensor data via SMS (or GPRS if

supported) to the GSM modem's phone number in the
control room.

3. GSM Network → GSM Modem (Control Room):

o The GSM modem receives SMS messages from the router

over the GSM network.

4. GSM Modem → SMS Gateway Server:

o The modem passes the SMS data to the SMS gateway

software for parsing and processing.

5. SMS Gateway Server → Database:

o The server stores parsed sensor data in a database.

6. Database → Power BI:

o Power BI fetches data from the database and visualizes it

on dashboards for the control room.
Key Considerations for Long Distance (164.70 km)

1. GSM Signal Strength at Both Locations:

o Test GSM signal strength at the sensor site and control

room.

o Use external antennas to improve signal reception if

required.

2. Power Supply for Field Site Equipment:

o If grid power is unavailable, use a solar panel with a

battery backup to power the router and sensors.

3. Data Security:

o Encrypt SMS messages if they contain sensitive

information.

o Use secure credentials for the database and Power BI.

4. Alternative Communication Methods:

o If GSM signal is weak or unreliable, consider satellite

communication for data transmission. Use satellite
modems like Iridium Edge or Thuraya to bridge the gap
between the field and control room.

power).

4. Cables: RS485/RS232 cables for sensor-to-router connection.
