Practice Sheet No: 2
Exercise: (1.4-1.6)

Star Shopping Complex (3rd Floor)

Pabna.
Mob: 01722-810469
Exercise: 1.4
 Fractions: Fraction is a mathematical presentation of numbers and represents a part of a
1 1
whole thing. Such as: 3 , 5 , 0.34, 1.4 etc.
 Fractions are of two types: (i) Common Fractions (ii) Decimal Fractions
(i) Common Fractions: A common fraction is made up of a numerator and a
denominator. The numerator is shown on top of a line and is the number of parts of the
whole. The denominator is shown below the line and is the number of parts by which the
3 7
hole has been divided. For example: 5 , 15 are common fractions.

(ii) Decimal Fractions: Decimal fraction is a fraction where the denominator is 10 or a

power of 10 (such as 100, 1000 etc). We usually decimal fractions with a decimal point
(.). For example, 0.12, 0.15 are decimal fractions.

 Common fractions are of three types. Such as:

a) Proper fractions
Page # 1
Tauhid Shikkha Poribar (01722-810469) 2
b) Improper fractions
c) Mixed fractions
a) Proper fraction: In a fraction, if numerator is less than the denominator, then the
3 2
fraction is called proper fraction. For example: 5 , 7 are proper fractions.
b) Improper fraction: An improper fraction is one where numerator is greater than
5 7
denominator. Such as 2 , 4 etc. are improper fractions.
c) Mixed fraction: In the fraction, if there is an integral part and an another part which is
3 5
a proper fraction is called mixed fraction. Such as 2 5 , 1 7 are mixed fractions.
 Based on the form and functionality, common fractions are sometimes named differently.
Equivalent fractions: If we multiply or divide the numerator and denominator of a
fraction by the same number, except by O (zero), the absolute value of the fraction does
4 28
not change. These fractions are called equivalent fractions. 5 and 35 are equivalent
fractions.

Reciprocals: The reciprocals of a fraction is another fraction with the numerator and
3 5
denominator exchanged. The reciprocal of 5 is 3 .

Simple fractions: The fraction, where both numerator and denominator are integer, is
2 3
called simple fraction. Such as 5 , 1 7 etc. are simple fractions.

Complex fractions: In a fraction, either the numerator or the denominator or both is a

fraction or a mixed number, then the fraction is called the mixed fraction. In other word,
2 1 2
1
3 2 3
in a complex fraction, both numerator and denominator is an integer. 5 , ,
3 3
are
5
examples of mixed fractions.

Fractions having same numerators: If the denominators of two or move than two fractions
5 5
are same, then the fractions are called the fractions having same numerators. 7 and 9 are
two fractions having same numerators.

Fraction in lowest terms:

The fraction obtained by eliminating all the common factors (if any) of the numerator and
denominator of a fraction is called the fraction of lowest terms. For example: lowest form
6 2× 3 3
of 8 = 2× 2× 2 = 4 .

 If denominators of two fractions are equal, then the fraction having greater numerator is
greater than other.
Page # 2
Tauhid Shikkha Poribar (01722-810469) 3
 If the numerators of two fractions are equal, then the fraction having greated denominator
is less than the other.
 If any fraction is multiplied by its reciprocal, then the result is always1.
 Mixed fractions can be converted in to improper fractions and again, improper fractions
can be converted into mixed fractions.
 Mixed fractions contain an integral part and a proper fraction.
 The value of a proper fraction is always less than 1.
Integer × Denominator + Numerator
 Mixed fraction = Denominator
.
 To divide a fraction by another fraction we need to multiply the first fraction by the
reciprocal of the second fraction.

Page # 4
Tauhid Shikkha Poribar (01722-810469) 5
 Sum of the4 fractions having same denominator is a fraction whose denominator is the
denominator of the given fractions and the numerator is the sum of the numerators of the
given fractions.
 The difference of the fractions having same denominator is a fraction whose denominator
is the denominator of the given fractions and numerator is the difference of the numerator
of the given fractions.
Numerator of the fraction× Integer
 Fraction × integer = Denominator of the fraction
.
H . C . F of the numerators of the given fractions
 H.C.F of given fractions = L .C . M of the demerators of the given fractions .
L. C . M of the numerators of the given fractions
 L.C.M of given fractions = H .C . F of the demerators of the given fractions .
 Before determining L.C.M or H.C.F of given fractions, we first have to reduce all
fractions to the lowest terms.
 Simplification of fractions: The order that must be followed in case of simplification is:
Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. Again among the brackets,
successively operation of first (), second {}, and the third [] brackets should be done. If
there is no sign just before the brackets, then a presence of ‘OF’ is considered there.
 If is convenient to remember the acronym ‘BODMAS’ formed with the initial letter of all
operations in doing simplification.

 Addition of decimal fractions: In case of addition of decimal numbers we need to arrange

them is such a way that the decimal points remain one below other according to their
position.
 Subtraction of decimal fractions: Same as the case of addition of decimal fractions, we
need to arrange the given fractions keeping the decimal points directly under one after the
other and then we have to subtract them.
 Multiplication of decimal fractions: In case of multiplication of decimal fractions, firstly,
we have to avoid decimal points and multiply the numbers as in the ordinary
multiplication of numbers. Then we have to put decimal point in the product it will have
as many decimal places as the two original numbers combined.
 Division of decimal fractions: In case of division of decimal fractions, first, we have to
move the decimal point of the divisor to the end of the numeral and then have to move the
decimal point of the dividend the same number of positions, and then we can divide as the
ordinary division method of numbers.
