TOPIC- MODALS
Modals are those auxiliary (helping) verbs which express mode\mood or manner of the actions
indicated by the main verbs, they express modes or moods such as: ability, possibility,
probability, permission, obligation, order etc.
Some common modal auxiliaries are- will, shall, can, could, may, might, would, should, ought
to, must, dare\dare to, used to, need to.
*A modal doesn’t change according to the number or person of the subject.
Eg. I can learn.
You can learn.
They can learn.
He/She can learn.
*A modal is always used with a verb in its basic form. The modal takes the tense while the main
verb remains unchanged.
Eg. I can swim.
I could swim.
I might swim.
*Modals can be used alone in response to a question.
Eg. Can you swim?
I can swim.
Will you dance?
I will dance.
*Modals when joined with ‘not’ to form a negative can be contracted. Eg. I cannot (can’t) swim.
