Describe the tree in a far corner of the garden.

Ans

One winter morning, he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did not hate the Winter
now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep, and that the flowers were resting. Suddenly, he
rubbed his eyes in wonder, and looked and looked. It certainly was a marvelous sight. In the farthest
corner of the garden was a tree quite covered with lovely white blossoms. Its branches were all golden,
and silver fruit hung down from them, and underneath it stood the little boy he had loved. Downstairs ran
the Giant in great joy, and out into the garden. He hastened across the grass, and came near to the child,
and when he came quite close, his face grew red with anger, and he said, ‘Who hath dared to woundhee?’
For on the palms of the child’s hands were the prints of two nails, and the prints of the little feet. ‘Who hath
dared to wound thee?’ cried the Giant; ‘Tell me, that I may take my big sword and slay him.’ ‘Nay!’
answered the child; ‘but these are the wounds of Love.’ ‘Who art thou?’ said the Giant, and a strange awe
fell on him, and he knelt before the little child. And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to him, ‘You let
me play once in your garden; today, you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise.’ And when

It was no common shop this; it was a magic shop. For a moment or so we were alone and could
glance at us. There was a tiger in papier-mâché on the glass case that covered the low counter; there
were several crystal spheres, a China hand holding magic cards, and an immodest magic hat that
shamelessly displayed its springs. On the floor were magic mirrors; one to draw you out long and thin, and
one to make you short and fat; and while we were laughing at these the shopman, as I suppose, came in.
There he was behind the counter- a curious, sallow, dark man, with one ear larger than the other. ‘What
can we have the pleasure?’ he said, spreading his long, magic fingers on the glass case; and so with a
start, we were aware of him. ‘I want,’ I said, ‘to buy my little boy a few simple tricks.’ ‘Legerdemain?’ he
asked. ‘Mechanical? Domestic?’ ‘Anything amusing?’ said I. ‘Um!’ said the shopman, and scratched his
head. Then, quite distinctly, he drew from his head a glass ball. ‘Something in this way?’ he said, and held

somebody trying to take advantage of her.
2) How did Raju feel on returning the phone?
Ans Raju felt very happy that he had returned the phone to the rightful owner.

We had gone to Cochin, 45 kilometres from our village, last year, to visit a relative in hospital. When
Jairaj’s mobile rang, it was our houseboy, asking if I had lost my mobile. I checked my purse frantically. It
was gone!
I used Jairaj’s phone to dial my number and Raju, answered it. “I found your phone!” he said,
excitedly. He spoke halting Malayalam, with a strange accent. “I have been trying to find you.” He gave
me the address of a kaapi-kada [coffee shop].
I went to meet him there. I didn’t dare go alone. So Jairaj came along.
I needn’t have bothered. After driving 10 km, we got to a rustic coffee shop where Raju, a teenager,
and his friends would hang out after work. Raju didn’t own a cellphone himself, so I had to call my own
number to locate him.
Raju was just a young boy who addressed me respectfully as Chechy [big sister]. “How did you
inform my house?” I asked. He explained that when he found my mobile by the roadside, he started
calling up people in my list of contacts. But all they had was my cellphone number. “Please inform the
owner that I have kept this phone safe,” Raju told each person. He’d called many names until he got Aji
who called my house.
I was delighted to get my phone. We offered Raju money as a reward, but he would have none of it.
As we drove back, I thought about Raju and his fellow workers. They earn little, sleep on straw mats, live
far away from their families, and own next to nothing. But, unlike many better off people who’ve said
“finders keepers” after picking up a lost phone, Raju knew he had to help. “I am happy, Chechy, to return
your phone,” he said smilingly.

We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the world go forth from this
time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans,
born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient
heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation
has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden,
meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.
The much we pledge - and more. To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share,
we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United there is little we cannot do in the host of cooperative
ventures. Divided there is little we can do; for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split
asunder.
To those new states whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form
of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. We shall
not always expect to find them supporting our view. But we shall always hope to find them strongly
supporting their own freedom; and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by
riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.

begging. Steady streams of tourists were walking past her. A lone young back-packer stood away from the
throng drinking something, but I noticed he was also observing the woman.
She knelt motionless, her head almost touching the ground, a flimsy shawl providing little protection
against the cold. The sight was especially poignant when contrasted with the visible signs of Venetian
wealth, both past and present, around her.
A tourist group bustled along the street, glanced at the woman and walked on. Another group of
tourists arrived and, again, walked past her. The backpacker watched. Then, as I prepared to leave, I
stopped at the sight of the backpacker stepping forward and placing some money in the woman’s cup. He
did this rather ostentatiously, just before the arrival of another tourist group. I watched as the leader of the
sightseers stopped and put some money in the cup. Having been shown the way, other tourists followed
suit and added more coins to the woman’s cup.
The young backpacker repeated this process in front of the next tour party going past. Once again,
the subtle peer pressure worked on the tourists, who all added coins to the cup. His work done, the young
man walked over to the old beggar woman, patted her shoulder and said, “I hope that helps a bit.”

1) Complete the views the author has about books
Books should be treated with ...............
Ans Books should be treated with affectionate intimacy and formality .

2) Complete the views the author has about books

Books are ...............
Ans Books are for use, not for show.

The habit of reading is one of the greatest resources of mankind; and we enjoy reading books that
belong to us much more than if they are borrowed. A borrowed book is like a guest in the house; it must
be treated with punctiliousness, with a certain formality. You must see that it sustains no damage; it must
not suffer while under your roof. You cannot leave it carelessly, you cannot mark it, you cannot turn down
the pages, you cannot use it familiarly. And then, someday, although this is seldom done, you really ought
to return it.
But your own books belong to you; you treat them with that affectionate intimacy and formality.
Books are for use, not for show; you should own no book that you are afraid to place on the table, wide
open and face down. A good reason for marking favourite books is that this practice enables you to
remember more easily the significant sayings, to refer quickly, and then, in later years, it is like visiting a
forest where you once blazed a trail. You have pleasure of going over old ground, and recalling both the
intellectual scenery and your earlier self.
One should have one’s own bookshelves, which have no doors, glass windows or keys, they should
be free and accessible to the hand as well as the eye. Most of my indoor life is spent in a room containing
six thousand books; and I have the stock answer to the invariable question that comes from strangers.
“ Have you read all these books?” “ Some of them twice.” This reply is both true and unexpected.

The appointed day has come - the day appointed by destiny-and India stands forth again after the
long slumber and struggle, awake, vital, free and independent.
The past clings on to us still in some measure and we have to do much before we redeem to pledge
we have so often taken. Yet the turning point is past, and history begins anew for us, the history which we
shall live and act and others will write about.
It is a fateful moment for us in India, for all Asia and for the world. A new star arises, the star of
freedom in the East, a new hope comes into being, a vision ling cherished materializes. May the star
never set and that the hope never be betrayed !
We rejoice in that freedom, even though clouds surround us and many of our people are sorrow-
stricken and difficult problems encompass. Us But freedom brings responsibilities and burdens and we
have to face them in the spirit of a free and disciplined people.
On this day our first thoughts go to the architect of this freedom, the Father of our Nation, who,
embodying the old sprit of India, held aloft the torch of freedom and lighted up the darkness that
surrounded us. We have often been unworthy followers of this great son of India, magnificent in his faith
and strength and courage and humility. We shall never allow that torch of freedom to be blown out,
however high the wind or stormy the tempest.

13 A1) Write whether the statements are true or false. 2

Ans When the task to be done is easy, less energy is released. - True

Ans When your energy is used well, your personality too becomes strong. - True

3) Every one has the same mind but the energy level is different.
Ans False - Every one has the same mind which is full of energy.

4) A person who is easy going becomes a super achiever if he takes up a bigger task and uses his
energy well.
Ans A person who is easy going becomes a super achiever if he takes up a bigger task and uses his energy
well. - True

Our mind has unlimited reserves of energy. When we decide to do anything the mind at once
releases energy and we perform with the aid of this energy. The mind is the prime source of energy. If we
choose to do an easy task , the mind will release less amount of energy and if we decide to do some
difficult or great task, then the mind will release greater amount of energy.
The building of a personality depends on your own efforts. If you are an easy going person then you
are bound to receive less energy from your mind and the result is that your personality too becomes
weak. If you are ambitious then you are bound to take up greater tasks then your mind will release greater
amount of energy resulting in the development of a strong personality.
Everyone is born with the same mind that is full of energy but some people fail to utilise their energy
and die without developing their personalities. The other kind of people become super achievers as your
mind will release greater amount of energy resulting in the development of a strong personality.
Thus man himself is the master of his destiny. It all depends on how much a man has unfolded his
mind and how much energy has been released by his mind. Every man is self made . The quantum of
success depends on one’s own planning. Try to utilise your mind and you will achieve whatever you want
in life.

Ans
A2) Answer the following : 2
Why does the writer say that every man is self made?
Ans A man decides his actions. If he does greater task his mind releases greater energy for him to
complete his task. Similarly if he decides on an easier task the mind too will release lesser energy for the
lesser task. Thus it depends on each one to decide his style of work. Thus a man is self made.

blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so
sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen them. ‘How happy we are here!’ they

Dear Diary, Sorry, I could not write anything yesterday. Christmas Day ! What great fun we had.
And, so much has happened since then, I hope I can remember to put it all down. The reason I had no
time to write my diary was that of the digital camera. Yes! I got one for Christmas, and I feel so lucky. I
think Arun is a little jealous because he will have to wait till we get home to play his video games. I spent
the day taking photos of everything that moved and everything that did not move. It’s just great. If the
photos come out badly, I can just delete them. It’s much simpler than my old camera, and there is no
waste. When I get home, I can download all the images on to my computer and send them to my friends.
We ate too much yesterday. If I carry on like this, I will need a new pair of jeans. Today we are on a boat.
It has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and TWO sitting rooms …… well, not rooms really, more like
verandas. Mum and Dad think it is brilliant, but they are asleep most of the time. There is not too much to
do. It’s interesting only when we go down the narrow rivers and canals. Then I can see what’s going on,
and what people are doing. Everyone is really friendly down here, they wave and shout out when we go
by. Arun is not interested. He just sits with the cook and tries to catch fish over the side of the boat. Luckily
we are not depending on him for our meals, otherwise, I would not need those new jeans after all. We
have another day of this. I must get a shot of the sunset tomorrow. It was really beautiful today, but I forgot
I had my camera.

ii) Complete the sentence. 1
The magnetic energy of the earth ...............
Ans The magnetic energy of the earth keeps pulling the compass needle

I always tell the young to dream. This message comes from the understanding that each one of us
has within ourselves the ability to create the circumstances for success- to attract, so to say, to ourselves
what we desire. When as a child Einstein first saw a compass he was fascinated by the way the needle
moved whenever he changed direction. Watching the needle became an obsession with him as he tried to
understand the invisible force that moved the compass needle. Where was the force located? Who
controlled it? Why did it always work? What was it made of ? Were there places where it didn’t operate? It
is of course the magnetic energy of the earth that keeps pulling the compass needle, a tiny magnet , along
the north - south axis of the earth’s magnetic field. But is that all there is to it? We can easily see the
magnetic field at work, but cannot detect it with our senses even though it is everywhere on our planet.
Logically then, it is in us too.
Similarly , our planet is in a perpetual state of motion as it goes spinning through space. Everything
on the planet is a part of this movement, even though it appears to us that we are motionless. I am on
the planet and thus part of the energy that moves it. The energy that is the very essence of the planet is in

I liked best was the one about his escape , from a Japanese prisoner-of war camp in Burma. He told me
again and again how he walked two hundred miles in two weeks. On the way, he was bitten on the toe by
a poisonous snake and had to cut off part of the toe in order to survive. But the wound did not heal and by

In the US of A, ............... and forest work ............... sometimes use llamas to carry their gear.

Did you know that the llama of South and North America is related to the camel? Llamas don't have
humps like camels and don't grow as large, but like their camel cousins they are very helpful to man.|
It is believed llamas were domesticated from guanacos (another camel cousin) 4,000 to 5,000 years
ago. They are among the oldest domesticated animals in the world.
Since ancient times the native people of the Andean Mountains of Peru have used llamas as pack
animals. This means they would pack heavy items in sacks on a llama's back to carry goods from one
place to another. They also used llama wool for clothing, rugs and ropes and their hides for shoes, gloves
and shelter. Llamas have been a source of meat, and their pellets are dried and burned for fuel.
Llamas are used as pack animals in the United States too. Hikers and forest work crews sometimes
use llamas to carry their gear. They are also used for pulling carts. A few people even have llamas as
pets.
Several things make llamas great pack animals.
• They are sure-footed and can carry heavy loads 5, 10 or even 20 miles a day over rough and steep
terrain.
• Their blood absorbs more oxygen than most other mammals. This makes llamas excellent pack animals
in the mountains where the oxygen is thinner.
• They need less water than most other animals.
• They are intelligent and willing workers. Because they are social animals they are happiest and do their
best when in herds.
Recently, llamas have also been used as guard animals working together with herding dogs to
protect sheep and goats from coyotes.

Ans Listening to a quack may have fatal results. - True

It is the height of selfishness for men, who fully appreciate in their own case the great advantage of
a good education, to deny these advantages to women. There is no valid argument by which the
exclusion of the female sex from the privilege of education can be defended. It is argued that women have
their domestic duties to perform, and that, if they were educated, they would bury themselves in their
books and have little time for attending to management of their households. Of course it is possible for
women, as it is for men, to neglect necessary work in order to spare more time for reading sensational
novels. But women are no more liable to this temptation than men, and most women would be able to do
their household work all the better for being able to refresh their minds in the intervals of leisure with a
little reading. Nay, education would even help them in the performance of the narrowest sphere of
womanly duty. For education involves knowledge of the means by which health may be preserved and
improved, and enables a mother to consult such modern books as will tell her how to rear up her children
into healthy men and women and skillfully nurse them and her husband when disease attacks her
household. Without education she will be not unlikely to listen with fatal results to the advice of
superstitious quacks, who pretend to work wonders by charms and magic.

On fierce monsoon nights, about one and a quarter mile off the Mumbai harbour, there have been
occasions when 52-year-old Bikaji Ramchandra Dhuri is the only man on sea. From the watchtower of the
Prongs Reef Lighthouse, which is surrounded on all sides by the Arabian Sea, he has heard the sea rage
like a possessed spirit-the darkness dispelled only by the beam of light flung across the waters from the
tower he mans. Dhuri is one of the last breed of lighthouse keepers on the Indian coast, as a majority of
the 182 lighthouses in the country are now unmanned. Built in 1871, the Prongs Reef lighthouse was
modelled on Scotland’s Skerryvore Rocks Lighthouse, and is located at a strategic spot on the western
coast, marking the entrance to the busy Mumbai Harbour. It was meant to stem the number of shipwrecks
off the harbour, which the lone Colaba lighthouse could not illumine on its own. “Even now, during nights,
for fishing vessels without any gadgets, it’s the soft light from this tower which directs us to Mumbai,” says
Vinayak Koli, a boatsman who helps ferry people and also goes on fishing expeditions. - Through the
year, Dhuri lives in the lighthouse for 15 days at a stretch, when he is relieved by another keeper. In the
monsoon, it becomes his home for three months. “We call it the kalapani as we are alone in the middle of
the sea for days, with basic supplies-and the revolving light that keeps the sea awake,” he says.

The father led the son towards the rocks on the seashore. The coastal rocks were used by the sea
birds for their nesting grounds. There were feathers galore all over the shore. During the weeks that
followed, walking amongst the rocks at dusk and after nightfall, father and son began to make a collection
of the finest feathers they could find. By day, out of view of the watchful eyes of the guards, they began to
weave the feathers together. Daedulus had no tools to work with, save for a needle that he always wore in
his tunic. With this and with threads plucked carefully from an old blanket, he began to sew together the
larger feathers. To bind the softer, more delicate feathers, Daedulus melted and used the wax of old
candles. The feathers were built up, layer upon layer, and shaped to resemble the wings of a giant bird.
Very soon, four enormous wings had been fashioned from the feathers. “Today, we can finally try out our
wings,’ said Daedulus one sunny day. ‘Look ! The sea is calm, and the clouds idle along. The breeze is by

Ans People mocked her by saying her gymnastics were nothing but simple circus tricks to entertain the

She wasn’t much known before this, given her upbringing in a remote city not much in the news in
India, but she is now remembered all over the world for performing the life threatening stunt Produnova
Vault which till date has been performed by only five women worldwide. It is one of the deadliest stunts
which if performed wrongly can leave you disabled for your entire life or can even kill you. The vault has
been named after the Russian gymnast Yelena Sergeyevna Produnova who was the first to do this dare
devil stunt.
Born on 9th August 1993 to a middle class family of a weight lifter sportsman father Dulal Karmakar
and housewife mother Gouri Karmakar, Dipa was only six years old when she started her coaching under
mentors Gouri Nandi and Bisweshwar Nandi. The little Dipa was initially reluctant to go for gymnastics but
she did give in to the demands of her father.
The first obstacle she faced when she hit the gymnastics floor was the fact she had flat feet. That
was considered a disastrous thing for a gymnast. It was only her foolish courage and tremendous
dedication that in the years to come she developed an arch in her tender yet strong feet. Sports ran in her
blood, since her father was a sportsperson himself. ..
To achieve success and follow your passion, one needs practice, and Dipa Karmakar was no
exception. It was a kind gesture of her school headmistress Shobhona Dutta who allowed her to attend
only four classes and then continue with her practice. There was no big coach or a good platform for her
to practise this sport. She had only her coach and her own self to do all the hard work. All need a
coach/mentor but it is only that passion which can help one achieve the dreams he/she wishes.
She never had a vaulting table to practice; all she had was a stack of gym mattresses with the
corners tied with rope so that they didn’t quiver, and Dipa could land on them during her stunts. Speaking
in terms of medical grounds, landing on gym mattresses can leave you with a broken spine or any other
fatal physical injury and you will forever live a crippled life. That didn’t deter Dipa from her practice; she
only focused on her lessons.
The major breakthrough in Dipa’s life happened when she bespoke her dexterity in the Northeastern
Games Competition in 2002, by bagging a gold medal on the balancing beam. She was still a little child of
eight years competing with seniors of all age brackets. There was no looking back. The small town girl
had won 77 medals including 67 golds since 2007 and looked at Ashish Kumar as her idol.
Dipa Karmakar undergoes rigorous training every day, she improves each day. She doesn’t stop
learning. Her regime starts at 9AM till 12.30PM and then again from 5PM till 8.30PM..
There was one more thing as well; people mocked her by saying her gymnastics were nothing but
simple circus tricks to entertain the masses. She wept, she was hurt but what she did was to NEVER
GIVE UP.

Ans
A2) Answer the following : 2
Dipa took a dangerous decision in the absence of a vaulting table. What was the alternative that she
used?
Ans Dipa never had a vaulting table to practice; So she used a stack of gym mattresses with the corners
tied with rope so that they didn’t quiver, Dipa could land on them during her stunts. Speaking in terms of

injury and you will forever live a crippled life.

treatment for the poor and grief stricken Indians was not even a submerged promise then. So young Bose
armed himself for the great service. He went to the poorest section of the town to treat the sick.

gesture. So, they threatened him and said, "Don't come here to bother us. We don't need anybody. And

Samuel Evan Stokes, 21, came to India with the intention of working at a home for lepers in the
Simla hills. He married a local pahari girl, played an active role in India’s freedom struggle and was even
jailed by the British. Somewhere along the way, he introduced apple crop in the hills around Shimla.
In his free time, he set about exploring the surrounding hills and the trail that was the old Hindustan-
Tibet road. He loved it and he decided that he wanted to spend the rest of his life here.
His family who had a prosperous business of elevators did not approve of this. However, realising
that her son was determined to spend his life in India, Florence Stokes came visiting in 1911. During that
time, the area that is Thanedar today was a 200-acre tea plantation owned by a widow called Mrs Bates.
Stokes’s mother bought him the plantation as a gift on February 6, 1912 for the princely sum of Rs
30,000.
When Samuel Stokes heard about the new strain of apples patented by the Stark Brothers nursery
in Louisiana called the Red Delicious, he bought a few saplings and planted them at his Barobagh orchard
in Thanedar in the winter of 1916. Five years later, his mother sent him a consignment of saplings as a

find. After a long search, the museum found a beautiful Old Master painting depicting youths and maidens
frolicking in a wood. The directors were only too glad to pay millions for this painting because they were
captivated by its beauty and elegance. How delightfully the maidens' hair and mouths were drawn, how
perfectly the hands and arms of the youths, how lifelike the bare feet on the forest floor.
But the curator of the museum was the happiest one of all, for he had now become guardian and
protector of a famous work by a famous painter. "Every time I look at that painting," he would say, "I see
new beauties and excellence. My very soul resonates with the greatness of it all."
Needless to say, this wonderful painting was the most popular exhibit at the museum, providing
instruction and delight for thousands of visitors. Everyone, from the young child who could barely walk to
the old man who could barely walk, enjoyed its beauty ."This painting is almost too good to be true,"
remarked one visitor prophetically as he purchased a print of it.
One day a horrible discovery was made: the painting was not a genuine Old Master after all. It was
a forgery. It had not been painted by the famous artist whose name was on it, and in fact, it had been
painted within the last ten years. The museum directors and the curator were horrified and consumed with

What do you learn from this story?
Ans We learn from this story that anything that is valued is treasured and admired by all. However, as soon
as it loses its value, it is not given any importance. In the story, while the painting is thought to be genuine, it is
admired by all. However, as soon as it is found out that it is a forgery, it was dumped. We must thus create
things of value in our life whether it is our character or the work we do. We must do it perfectly so that it is
valued by others forever. If we cheat, we will never be valued.

village and often judged people on how quickly his letters were replied to. Having retired from service, he
posed a challenge to all relatives who knew the consequences of delayed replies. He became a treasured
repository of family news in the process.
Uncle spent an hour every morning writing detailed letters. He used the window sill as a desk,
sitting cross-legged on a wooden bench. He would be greeted loudly by his friends who walked past the
gate to the bus stop. He kept a small aluminum box next to him. It contained the postal stationery, pens
and an old paling dog-eared address book. This book had numerous crosses and arrows to signify
changes in addresses.
While my uncle wrote letters, Aunt would be squatting on the straw mat with knives, vegetables and
some old newspapers, preparing for the next meal. After writing the main news, he would read it aloud to
Aunt and relied on her remarkable memory to add important details like birth stars, offering at the local
temple or marriage proposals for someone in the family. He was adept at using the card and inland letter
to their fullest potential. After writing the main story which covered news from all family nooks, he would
add information of lesser significance in very small characters and utilize every millimeter of available
space. In fact the letter had to be turned in different directions for all the news to be read.

Is the art of letter writing dead? Discuss.
Ans Few people today write letters to each other. In the present era, we use messaging like SMS and
Whatsapp where short messages are sent to each other. Calls to each other are also very easy. In both
messaging and calls, the distance does not matter and the cost is very low. The language used is to the point
and the long, flowery language is no longer used. Thus, few people may be sending long letters to each other.
Thus, the art of letter writing may no longer be used.

Organized soccer games began in 1863. In soccer, two teams of eleven players try to kick or head
the ball into their opponents’ goal. The goalie, who tries to keep the ball out of the goal, is the only player
on the field who is allowed to touch the ball with his or her hands. The other players must use their feet,

Each crowd had a language of its own and spoke among themselves without the fear of being
overheard. Something as ubiquitous as dal tasted like sambar in the south, gaining its dal - ness as we
climbed up to Orissa ; tea was called, chya, chai and sa, while coffee was kafi, kaapi, and koffee. For a
person with limited skills when it comes to learning and understanding new languages, this was my Train
of Babel.
But I was clearly in a minority. The train had in it soldiers from the south going back to patrol
borders far away from home, and workers from the east going back home on a much - needed break -
both serving as the connection between various parts of the country. These were the polyglots, speaking
in tongues that had no relation with their own, at times in functional, curt phrases, or with flourish.
On the train, it was soon clear how important this was for those form the South and Northeast.
Every second passenger was a defence personnel, a majority of them belonging to the oldest regiment of
Indian Army, the Madras regiment, and the Assam Rifles. The other half was made up of labourers from
the east and further east - the seven sisters of the Northeast. The former protects, the latter serves.
The third kind of passengers were those from the North and Northeast, forced to come down
thousands of of kilometers for quality medical care. P Gupta, the patriarch of a family from Dimapur,
Nagaland, had come to the CMC Hospital in Vellore, where he underwent check - ups for his various
ailments. Those like him exposed the abject lack of medical facilities in the Northeast, home to over 40
million people - a population almost close to that of England.

For many years now, the clockwork mouse had lain at the bottom of the toy cupboard, gathering
dust, until one day Jimmy’s mother decided to have a clear – out and get rid of all the children’s old toys.
She was packing them into a big cardboard box to take to Oxfam when she came across the clockwork
mouse. For a split second, she thought it was a real one as it stared at her with its beady black eyes, and
she went cold with sudden fright. But then she recognized it, and picked it up by its tail, holding it rather
gingerly between her finger and thumb, for the tail felt horribly real. ‘No key,’ she thought, ‘Jimmy must
have lost it, so the thing’s no use to anyone,’ and she dropped it into the wastepaper basket. In due
course, the basket was emptied into the dustbin, and later the bin men came and tipped the contents of
the dustbin into the refuse lorry. Possibly because it was small, the clockwork mouse escaped being
squashed by the crusher inside the lorry, and so ended up all in one piece on the rubbish dump. It rained
that afternoon and washed all the dust and dirt off the toy so that by nightfall, it looked as good as new.

1) This man touched ...............

2) shows the relation between man and organisation.
Ans Because it is men who makes or breaks an organisation.

An ineffaceable mark is created in the minds of millions of Indians by our “People’s President” the
late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Very few eminent public figures that history has witnessed had created such a
deep influence even after their demise. This magical name sends an electrical signal to every soul in our
country who wants to be truly successful. He always preferred to converse with people directly instead of
using the web or the electronic media. He was very less aware of protocols and security measures. He
loved spending quality time amongst students in various schools, colleges and universities to interact with
them and to inspire them to be better individuals when they grow up
Here are numerous experiences of people who worked by the side of this man who has been
deeply motivated by his honest care, affection and thoughtfulness. It was once, under a very tight project
launch a scientist working under him requested an early leave as he was supposed to take his son to an
exhibition. Engrossed in his work, it was three hours late when he realised that he had not kept his word
to his son.. Going back home with a guilty heart he was amazed to know that his son was not at home.
Instead he was at his exhibition. It was Dr Kalam, who on noticing that the scientist was not leaving his
work, thought to keep his father’s promise to the child by taking him to the exhibition personally. It clearly
shows how much he valued his men. because it is men who makes or breaks an organisation.
Small instances like refusing to sit on a chair offered to him on a seminar at IIT Varanasi just because its
size was bigger than the rest shows how much he believed in being equal. Personally sending a
handwritten thank you card to a kid who sketched his portrait inspired by his book “Wings of Fire” shows

Self-reliance is like -
i. ...............
ii. ...............
Ans Self-reliance is like -
i. The pilgrim’s best staff
ii. The worker's best tool
iii. The masterkey. (any two)

Self-reliance is the pilgrim’s best staff, the worker's best tool. It is the master-key that unlocks all the
difficulties of life. ‘Help yourself and Heaven will help you’ is a maxim which receives daily confirmation.
Help from within always strengthens, but help from without invariably weakens the recipient. The habit of
depending on others tends to weaken the intellectual faculties and paralyses the judgment. The struggle
against adverse circumstances has, on the contrary, a strengthening effect, like that of the pure mountain
air on an enfeebled frame. This is the lesson which is not taught in school nowadays. The vice of the
modern system of education is that it lays down too many royal roads to knowledge. The difficulties which
formerly compelled the student to think and labour for himself or herself are now most carefully removed.
The race of through and complete scholars is dying out.

iii. Moved round to examine
iv. Long look at his head

On the final day of the circus,l a stout man with a navy blue suit stretched tightly upon him came
confidently through the entrance. He paused in front of the donkey and subjected the animal to a detailed
survey. He pursed his lips and shook his head, then moved back so that he could look at him from the
rear. He moved round to the other side of the donkey and examined him from there. He completed the
encircling of the donkey by a long look at his head. Now there was nothing more he wished to know about
this donkey. In the same movement he made to turn away, he let his hand fall heavily on the animal’s
back. It was the eight thousandth pat of the day. The donkey had seemed asleep but the sudden weight of
the man’s hand upon him affected him as if it were some signal for which he had been long waiting. He
lifted his heavy head with a jerk, turned, and snapped at the man’s arm with teeth that went off like a
rabbit trap. They closed on the sleeve of the man’s coat and ripped from the material a ragged patch of
blue cloth that remained projecting from the donkey’s mouth as the animal turned his head away to
continue his dreams. The man was astounded. He staggered back amongst the people with started eyes
and open mouth. He clutched his arm with his hand and looked at the people for confirmation of the
amazing thing that had happened to him. ‘He bit me !’ he exclaimed in horrified tones, then added, as he
looked unbelievingly at the donkey, ‘What a vicious brute !’.

Suddenly, I heard a group of street dogs barking furiously in the distance. I chose to ignore the
commotion thinking that the pack of dogs might have cornered a hapless pig. But soon, the barking
become louder and more aggressive and the alarmed cawing of a flock of crows added to the
cacophony. I also heard the disturbance approaching closer.
Curiosity got the better of me. Leaving the book aside, I rushed to the veranda to see what was
going on.
I glanced towards the roof of the club house and saw something horrible. A big male langur,
apparently the leader of its group, was holding a baby langur in his hands and mercilessly biting it all
over with a definite intent to kill. The helpless mother of the baby and other lesser members of the langur
group were scattered on the roofs of the buildings nearby watching the baby being killed. I recalled the
terrible custom in the animal clan according to which a dominant male usually does not allow another
male baby or adult to survive within its group.
Without wasting any time. I gathered a stout stick in one hand and hurled a piece of stone at the
marauding langur. The langur was so infuriated that it hardly took any notice of my assault. But then I
started throwing more stones. The dogs on their part raised their pitch of cry.

Ans The lesson changed the narrator’s outlook towards life forever - True

Today I would be narrating you about someone who inspired me and whom I could proudly call as
my role model. When I was young, I used to be a brat. I never listened to my parents. My mother would be
vexed at me because I would never listen to her. My father would be annoyed too. Those were the teen
days! I was just 15! We had a lesson called - 'Airborne to Chairborne' in our class 10 English
Curriculum. I seemed disinterested when our teacher started with the chapter. I just took it casually just
like another boring lecture. But when I started paying attention to it, I realized that this man is a brave-
heart! His life took a 180 degree turn in no time. I am talking about Air force Pilot Anil Kumar who had lots
of dreams in his eyes and ambitions. In this short span of life that we live, we need to accomplish many
things. major road accident changed his life upside down. That gory road accident left him paralyzed
below his neck. He was a great writer and a vivid reader. Because of that accident he couldn't use his
hands and limbs anymore. Imagine living a life of a torso with good pairs of legs and hands. Indeed! God
never showed mercy upon him. Indian Air force was kind enough and sheltered him in the Paraplegic
Rehabilitation Center in Khadki.
The road accident confined him to a wheel chair. Imagine yourself in such kind of a terrible
situation. You would know the pain if you were to wear his shoes. Many time in our life we have everything
and still we crib about many things. Mr. Anil Kumar made me cry through his essay when my teacher
narrated his story. Tears rolled down my cheeks when I learned about his plight. THOUGH disabled, he
never gave up. He wrote books and ensured that he gave time for his passion. The Indian Air force was
generous enough to gift him a computer which he operated by holding a pencil between his teeth and
sometimes using a stylus. It was 11 years ago when I first read about him. He changed my life to some
extent. I used to be a careless young boy of 15 but after reading his life story, I realized that life is too
short. In this short span of life that we live, we need to accomplish many things. Some of these things
matters us while some things don't! I told his story to my mother that same night. I seem to be disturbed. I
wanted to do something. I accepted him as my teacher and moved ahead in life. He motivated me through
his story. He taught me the most valuable lesson of my life - to light up your dreams even if you are in
darkness. This lesson is one of the most precious gift that I got by knowing him! Many people get
disheartened by small things. Losing your arms and legs in an accident is a sad thing. Having arms and
legs that don't function at all is even more disheartening.
Anil 'Sir' taught me through his story that there may be many hindrances in life but we should not
succumb to pressure and fall! Never give up!

In the dark days of winter, when the Antarctic sees virtually no sunlight, the penguins that remain on
the ice sheet sleep most of the day. To retain heat, penguins huddle in communities of up to 6,000 of their
own species. When it's time to create a nest, most penguins build up a pile of rocks on top of the ice to
place their eggs. The Emperor penguin, however, doesn't bother with a nest at all. The female Emperor
lays just one egg and gives it to the male to protect while she goes off for weeks to feed. The male
balances the egg on top of his feet, covering it with a small fold of skin called a brood patch. In the huddle,
the male penguins rotate regularly so that none of the penguins have to stay on the outside of the circle
exposed to the wind and cold for long periods of time. When it's time to take a turn on the outer edge of
the pack, the penguins tuck their feathers in and shiver. The movement provides enough warmth until they
can head back into the inner core and rest in the warmth. In order to reduce the cold of the ice, penguins
often put their weight on their heels and tails. Antarctic penguins also have complex nasal passages that
prevent 80 percent of their heat from leaving the body. When the sun is out, the black dorsal plumage
attracts its rays and penguins can stay warm enough to waddle or slide about alone.

few lines about it.
Ans I would like to live in a warm country. Because I like bright sunny days. In cold regions are mostly snow
covered and dull. I love travelling and visiting beaches whereas extreme cold does not favour outings.
I would like to live in a cold country. The crisp winter air is far more invigorating than the hot weather which
makes me sweat. I can then wear my sweaters and jackets. I can have hot beverages and food like a hot
chocolate or coffee or a comforting mug of soup. I can relax indoors and read a good book or watch an
interesting movie. On the other hand, I can go long walks without getting sweaty. Sports in cold countries are
fun too. I would like to go skiing and sledging.
