Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform overview
The Hit achi Virt ual St orage Plat form is a high- capacit y, high perform ance
dat a st orage syst em t hat offers a wide range of st orage and dat a services,
soft ware, logical part it ioning, and sim plified and unified dat a replicat ion
across het erogeneous st orage syst em s. I t s large- scale, ent erprise- class
virt ualizat ion layer com bined wit h dynam ic provisioning, Dynam ic Tiering,
and t hin provisioning soft ware, delivers virt ualizat ion of int ernal and
ext ernal st orage int o one pool.
Using t his syst em , you can deploy applicat ions wit hin a new fram ework,
leverage and add value t o current invest m ent s, and m ore closely align I T
wit h business obj ect ives. VSP st orage syst em s provide t he foundat ion for
m at ching applicat ion requirem ent s t o different classes of st orage and
deliver crit ical services including:
• Business cont inuit y services
• Cont ent m anagem ent services ( search, indexing)
• Non- disrupt ive dat a m igrat ion
• Thin provisioning
• Dynam ic Tiering
• High availabilit y
• Securit y services

New t echnological advances im prove reliabilit y, serviceabilit y and access t o
disk drives and ot her com ponent s when m aint enance is needed. Each
com ponent cont ains a set of LEDs t hat indicat e t he operat ional st at us of t he
com ponent . The syst em includes new and upgraded soft ware feat ures,
including Dynam ic Tiering, and a significant ly im proved, t ask- orient ed
version of St orage Navigat or t hat is designed for ease of use and includes
cont ext- sensit ive online help. The syst em docum ent at ion has been changed
t o a t ask- orient ed form at t hat is designed t o help you find inform at ion
quickly and com plet e t asks easily.

st orage syst em wit h hom ogeneous logic cont rol, cache, and front end and
back end int erfaces, all m ount ed in st andard Hit achi Dat a Syst em s 19- inch
racks.
A basic Virt ual St orage Plat form st orage syst em consist s of a cont roller
chassis and one or m ore drive chassis t hat cont ain t he dat a drives. The
syst em includes a cont rol rack ( Rack- 00) t hat cont ains a cont roller chassis,
and m ay be eit her diskless ( no drive chassis) or m ay cont ain one or t w o
drive chassis in t he sam e rack. Each drive chassis can cont ain one of t hree
drive t ypes: SFF HDDs or SSDs, LFF HDDs or SSDs, or Flash Module drives.
The cont roller chassis cont ains t he cont rol logic, processors, m em ory, and
int erfaces t o t he drive chassis and t he host servers. A drive chassis consist
of disk or SSD drives, power supplies, and t he int erface circuit ry connect ing
it t o t he cont roller chassis. The rem aining racks ( Rack- 01 and Rack- 02)
cont ain from one t o t hree drive chassis.
The following sect ions provide descript ions and illust rat ions of t he Hit achi
Virt ual St orage Plat form st orage syst em and it s com ponent s.

Controller chassis
The cont roller chassis ( fact ory designat ion DKC) includes t he logical
com ponent s, m em ory, disk drive int erfaces, and host int erfaces. I t can be
expanded wit h a high degree of granularit y t o a syst em offering up t o t wice
t he num ber of processors, cache capacit y, host int erfaces and disk st orage
capacit y.
The cont roller chassis includes t he following m axim um num ber of
com ponent s: t wo service processors, 512 GB cache m em ory, four grid
swit ches, four redundant power supplies, eight front- end direct ors, four
back- end direct ors, and t en dual fan assem blies. I t is m ount ed at t he
bot t om of t he rack because it is t he heavier of t he t wo unit s. I f a syst em has
t wo SVPs, bot h SVPs are m ount ed in cont roller chassis # 0.
The following illust rat ion shows t he locat ions of t he com ponent s in t he
cont roller chassis. The cont roller chassis is described in m ore det ail in
Syst em Com ponent s on page 3- 1.

Drive Chassis
A VSP st orage syst em can cont ain up t o t hree t ypes of dat a drives. Each
t ype of drive is m ount ed in a chassis t hat holds only t hat t ype of drive. Drive
t ypes cannot be int erm ixed wit hin t he sam e drive chassis.
The HDD/ SSD drive chassis ( fact ory designat ion DKU) cont ains eit her disk
( HDD) drives or flash ( SSD) drives, eight SAS swit ches, and t wo 8- fan
“ door ” assem blies t hat can be easily opened t o allow access t o t he drives.
There are t wo t ypes of DKU drive chassis. One t ype can cont ain up t o 80 3-
1/ 2 inch HDD disk drives or SSD flash drives. The second t ype can cont ain
up t o 128 2- 1/ 2 inch HDD disk drives or SSD flash drives.
The m axim um num ber of 3- 1/ 2- inch drives in a Virt ual St orage Plat form is
1280. The m axim um num ber of 2- 1/ 2 drives is 2048. The m axim um
num ber of Flash Module drives is 96. Det ails are locat ed in Syst em
Com ponent s on page 3- 1.
Flash chassis
I n addit ion t o t he chassis for disk and/ or flash drives, a second t ype of
chassis can be inst alled in a VSP syst em . A flash chassis ( fact ory
designat ion FBX) is a clust er of four flash boxes ( t rays) , as shown in t he
following illust rat ion. Each flash box cont ains up t o 12 flash m odules
( fact ory designat ion FMD) . A flash chassis cont ains up t o four flash boxes
and 48 flash m odules.

A VSP single m odule syst em ( 3 racks) can cont ain up t o t wo flash chassis.
Therefore, t he m axim um num ber of flash m odules is 96 per VSP m odule or
192 per t wo m odule ( 6- rack) syst em .

Syst em Com ponent s on page 3- 1.
Features
This sect ion describes t he m ain feat ures of t he Virt ual St orage Plat form .
Scalability
The Virt ual St orage Plat form is highly scalable and can be configured in
several ways as needed t o m eet cust om er requirem ent s:
• Them in im u m con figu r a t ion is a single rack cont aining one cont roller
chassis in a diskless configurat ion.
• A sm all VSP syst em could include a single rack cont aining one cont roller
chassis and one or t wo disk drive or flash chassis.
• A m id- sized VSP syst em could include one t o t hreeracks cont aining one
cont roller chassis and up t o eight drive chassis. A LFF drive chassis can
cont ain up t o 80 3- 1/ 2 inch disk drives. A SFF drive chassis can cont ain
a com binat ion of up t o a t ot al of 128 2- 1/ 2 disk and SSD dat a drives. An
Drive sizes can be int erm ixed wit hin a syst em but not wit hin a drive

chassis. Different chassis are required for t he 2- 1/ 2 inch dat a drives, 3-
1/ 2 inch, and 5- 1/ 2 inch flash m odule drives. See Table 1- 2 Drive
Specificat ions on page 1- 11 for det ails.
• The m a x im um con figu r a t ion is a six- rack t win version of t he above
t hat cont ains t wo cont roller chassis and up t o 16 drive chassis cont aining
up t o 2048 2- 1/ 2 inch disk drives or 1280 3- 1/ 2 inch disk drives. The
t ot al st orage space of t his configurat ion is 2- 1/ 2 PB. A six- rack syst em
can cont ain a m axim um of 192 1.6 TB flash m odule, wit h a m axim um
capacit y of 307.2 TB.
High performance
The Virt ual St orage Plat form includes several new feat ures t hat im prove t he
perform ance over previous m odels. These include:

• High speed disk drives t hat run at 7,200, 10,000, or 15,000 RPM

Drive chassis
The drive chassis ( fact ory designat ion DKU) includes t wo back- t o- back- disk

Flash module
The flash m odule ( fact ory designat ion FMD) is a Hit achi cust om - designed
and m anufact ured ent erprise class solid st at e st orage m odule. I t uses a
high perform ance, cust om ASI C flash cont roller and st andard flash m em ory
chips in an im plem ent at ion t hat exceeds t he perform ance of expensive SLC
SSDs, but cost s less t han inexpensive MLC SSDs. The flash m odule great ly
im proves t he perform ance and solid st at e st orage capacit y of t he VSP
syst em , while significant ly reducing t he cost per TB of st orage.
Even in t he init ial capacit y of 1.6 TB, t he flash m odule out perform s bot h
HGST MLC and SLC flash drives, has a longer service life, requires less
power per TB, and generat es less heat per TB t han SSDs. The VSP current ly
support s bot h 1.6 TB and 3.2 TB flash m odules.
Flash m odules can be used inst ead of or in addit ion t o disk and flash drives,
but t hey are inst alled in a flash chassis com posed of a clust er of four flash
boxes. The next sect ion describes t he flash box.

Data Protection
The Virt ual St orage Plat form is designed so t hat it cannot lose dat a or
configurat ion inform at ion from t he cache if t he power fails. The cache is
prot ect ed from dat a loss up for up t o t en m inut es by t he cache dest age
bat t eries while t he dat a is copied t o t he cache SSD ( flash m em ory) on t he
cache boards. This is explained in det ail in Bat t ery backup operat ions on
page 4- 5.
Shared memory
The Virt ual St orage Plat form shared m em ory is not on a separat e m em ory
m odule as it was in t he previous hardware syst em s. Shared m em ory resides
by default on t he first pair of cache boards in cont roller chassis # 0. When
you inst all soft ware feat ures such as Copy- on- Writ e Snapshot or Universal
Replicat or, t he shared m em ory usage increases as soft ware feat ures are
inst alled. Shared m em ory can use up t o 48 GB, which is t he m axim um
am ount of shared m em ory available if t he cache in t he first cache board pair
is configured t o t he m axim um of 64 GB.
Depending on how m uch cache m em ory is inst alled, it m ay be necessary t o
inst all m ore cache m em ory as m ore soft ware feat ures are inst alled in t he
syst em . Up t o 32 GB can be inst alled on each cache board. When 32 GB of
cache is inst alled, it is also necessary t o inst all a second SSD ( cache flash
m em ory) on t he cache board t o back up t he cache in case of power failure.
Each SSD is 16 GB.
I n addit ion t o cache, t he shared m em ory on each cache board cont ains a 1/
2 GB cache direct ory t o safeguard writ e pending dat a in t he cache in t he
unlikely case of double failure of t he shared m em ory cache area. The cache
direct ory has m apping t ables for t he VSD LDEVs and t he allocat ed cache
slot s in each VSD cache part it ion.
□ St andby m ode
Standby mode
When t he st orage syst em power cables are plugged int o t he PDUs and t he
PDU breakers are ON, t he st orage syst em is in st andby m ode. When t he
st orage syst em is in st andby m ode:
• The Basic Supply ( BS) LED on t he contr ol panel is ON. This indicat es t hat
AC power is applied t o t he power supplies but DC power is not supplied
t o t he rest of t he syst em , except as not ed below.
• The READY LED is OFF. This indicat es t hat t he cont roller and drive
chassis are not operat ional.
• The fans in bot h t he cont roller and drive chassisare running.
• The cache dest age bat t eries are being charged.
• The st orage syst em consum es significant ly less power t han it does in
operat ing m ode. For exam ple, a st orage syst em t hat draws 100 am ps
while operat ing draws only about 70 am ps in st andby m ode. See Table

W ARN I N G: Make cert ain t hat t he st orage syst em is powered off norm ally
and in st andby m ode before t urning off t he PDU circuit breakers. Ot herwise,
t urning off t he PDU circuit breakers can leave t he st orage syst em in an
abnorm al condit ion.
Pow er On procedures
Pr e r e qu isit e s:
• Ensure t hat t he st orage syst em is in st andby m ode. See St andby m ode
on page 4- 2.
N ot e : The cont rol panel includes a safet y feat ure t o prevent t he st orage
syst em power from accident ally being t urned on or off. The PS power ON/
OFF swit ch does not work unless t he ENABLE swit ch is m oved t o and held
in t he ENABLE posit ion while t he power swit ch is m oved t o t he ON or OFF
posit ions.
Follow t his procedure exact ly w hen powering t he st orage syst em on. Refer
t o t he illust rat ion of t he cont rol panel as needed.
1. On t he cont rol panel, check t he am ber BS LED and m ake sure it is lit . I t
indicat es t hat t he st orage syst em is in st andby m ode.
2. I n t he PS area on t he cont rol panel, m ove t he EN ABLE sw it ch t o t he
EN ABLED posit ion and hold it t here. While holding t he swit ch in t he
EN ABLED posit ion, m ove t he PS ON / OFF swit ch t o t he ON posit ion.
Then release bot h swit ches.
3. Wait for t he st orage syst em t o com plet e it s power- on self- t est and boot-
up processes. Depending on t he st orage syst em configurat ion, t his m ay
t ake several m inut es.
N ot e : I f SATA drives are inst alled, t he st orage syst em will not go t o
t he READY st at e unt il t he cache dest age bat t eries are charged t o at
least 50% . This could t ake up t o 90 m inut es if t he bat t eries are
com plet ely discharged. The st orage syst em generat es a SI M t hat
provides t he st at us of t he bat t ery charge. See Cache dest age bat t eries
on page 4- 6 for inform at ion about t he bat t eries.
4. When t he READY LED is ON, t he st orage syst em boot up operat ions are
com plet e and t he st orage syst em is ready for use.
Follow t his procedure exact ly when pow ering t he st orage syst em off.
1. I n t he PS area on t he cont rol panel, m ove t he EN ABLE swit ch t o t he
EN ABLED posit ion and hold it t here. While holding t he swit ch in t he
EN ABLED posit ion, m ove t he PS ON / OFF swit ch t o t he OFF posit ion.
Then release bot h swit ches.
2. Wait for t he st orage syst em t o com plet e it s shut dow n rout ines.
Depending on t he st orage syst em configurat ion and cert ain MODE
set t ings, it can t ake up t o 20 m inut es for t he st orage syst em t o copy
dat a from cache t o t he disk drives and for t he disk drives t o spin down.
Battery life
The bat t eries have a lifespan of t wo years, and will hold a charge for t hat
t im e when disconnect ed. When t he bat t eries are connect ed and power is on,
t hey are charged cont inuously. This occurs during bot h norm al syst em
operat ion and while t he syst em is in st andby m ode.
When t he bat t eries are connect ed and t he power is off, t he bat t eries slowly
discharge. They will have a charge of less t han 50% aft er t wo weeks wit hout
power. When fully discharged, t he bat t eries m ust be connect ed t o power for
t hree hours t o fully recharge.
N ot e : The st orage syst em generat es a SI M w hen t he cache dest age
bat t eries are not charged t o at least 50% . The LEDs on t he front panel of
t he cache boards also show t he st at us of t he bat t eries.

operat ing online.

report ed t o t he m ainfram e host s once every eight hours.

RAI D gr ou p
A set of RAI D disks t hat have t he sam e capacit y and are t reat ed as one
group for dat a st orage and recovery. A RAI D group cont ains bot h user
dat a and parit y inform at ion. This allows user dat a t o be accessed in t he
event t hat one or m ore of t he drives wit hin t he RAI D group are not
available. The RAI D level of a RAI D group det erm ines t he num ber of
dat a drives and parit y drives and how t he dat a is “ st riped” across t he
drives. For RAI D1, user dat a is duplicat ed wit hin t he RAI D group, so
t here is no parit y dat a for RAI D1 RAI D groups.
A RAI D group can also be called an array group or a parit y group.
