PH142, General Physics II (2021 Fall)

 Subject Code/Name: PH142, General Physics II (three credits/semester)

 Main Textbook:
Essential University Physics by Richard Wolfson (Pearson Addison Wesley, 4th ed.)

 Auxiliary Textbook:
Physics (6th ed.) by Giancoli (Pearson): previous textbook for Basic Physics course
University Physics (13th ed.) by Young & Freedman (Addison-Wesley)
Physics for Scientists and Engineers (2nd ed.) by Randall D. Knight (Addison-Wesley)

 Composition of this Lecture:

- Regular lecture introduced by professor using either real time online-lecture (Zoom) or
recorded video – mandatory for all students:
3 hours per week. It is held either in English.
- Real-time homework solving class (Zoom) by teaching assistants – no attendance check
Once a week
- Real-time free Q&A session (Zoom) by teaching assistants – no attendance check
Once a week

 Evaluation Criteria: (the followings may change)

- Attendance: 30 % (checked through a short lecture summary on a weekly basis.)
* Students absent more than 1/3 of total class attendance is entitled to U grade.
- Homework: 30 % (homework submitted on a weekly basis)
- Final exam: 40 %
- Final grades will be marked either S or U.

 Summary of Lecture:
- Physics is the fundamental science, governing the entire universe only with few basic
principles. In this class, we will learn about those basic principles using calculus-based
techniques, to help students build the analytical and quantitative skills and confidence
needed to apply physics in problem-solving for science and engineering. During the
course, you will see the relevance and excitement of the physics you're studying with
wide ranging and contemporary applications in science, technology, and everyday life.
- In this semester, general physics II, you will learn about Electromagnetism, Optics, and
Modern physics including relativity, quantum mechanics, and current issues in physics.
