Introduction

Magnetism is a phenonon found throughout the nature and manmade

technology alike. It's even thought that this effect, caused by the earth,s
magnetic field is what allows birds to orient themselves too. It's no wonder
birds are able to migrate vast distances across countries and oceans and
end up in the right location! We are probably most familiar with magnets
produced by the bar magnets you might have seen or used in your
classroom or school laboratory.

What is a magnet?
A magnet is an object that produces a magnetic
field, which attracts or repels other materials,
particularly metals like iron, cobalt, and nickel.
Magnets have two poles: a north pole and a south
pole, and opposite poles attract and like poles
repel.. Magnets can be natural, like lodestone, or
artificial, created by humans through processes
like aligning the magnetic domains of certain
materials. Magnets are used in various devices,
from compasses to motors and electronic
equipment.

Facts About Magnets

Magnets Have Two Poles. Every magnet has a north pole and a south
pole.
Magnets Produce A Force.
Not All Metals Are Magnetic.
4

There Are Different Types of Magnets.

The Earth Is A Large Magnet.
Compasses Rely on Earth.
The World,s Strongest Magnet Is Neodymium Magnet(Nd) Which Is
Made Of Neodymium, Iron And Boron.

Behavior Of Magnets:
An object can be classified as magnet as a magnet only exhibits the
properties as follows:
 Attractive force on iron or other ferromagnetic materials
 Attractive and repulsive forces on other magnets
 Allign itself in the north south direction when suspended freely

The Strength Of Magnetic Force:

The strength of the magnetic field will be greater on either ends of the
magnets termed as poles. When the magnet is suspended freely, the end of
the magnet which points towards the north side is known as north pole.
The other end of the magnet which points towards to the south side is
known as south pole

Inside A Magnet
The region where the magnetic material where the magnetic fields of
the atoms are aligned is called the domain. When a permanent magnet
is brought close to a ferromagnetic material which later makes it to
behave like a magnet(induction). In some materials the domains will
stay alligned even when the external magnetic field is removed. The
domains do not return to their original positions. Such materials are
called permanent magnets
Hard Magnet Soft Magnet

Hard magnetic materials can,t be Soft magnetic materials can be

magnetised and demagnetised easily magnetised and demagnetised
easily. They retain their magnetic and they will lose their magnetic
properties for a longer duriation properties very fast once they are
when they are away from the away from the magnetic field
magnetic field.

The Magnetic Field

The area around the magnet where another magnet or a ferromagnetic
material can feel the force of attraction and repulsion is called magnetic
field . The magnetic field lines are marked from north pole to south pole.
The magnetic field strength is greated towards the poles.
6

The Earth,s Magnetic Field

Earth is a huge magnet. The magnetic field of our earth is
caused by the electric currents in the liquid outer core
which is made up of molten iron. Flowing of liquid metal
in the outer core generates electric currents . The rotation
of earth around it,s axis causes these electric current to
produce magnetic field.
The earth,s magnetic south pole is also known as the grographic north pole
as it attracts the north pole of the magnet. The earth,s magnetic north pole
is also known as geographic south pole as it attracts the south pole of the
magnet.

The Link Between Magnetism And Electricity

The electric current flowing through the wire produces magnetic field

The right hand thumb rule state that if thumb of the

right hand points along the direction of the current then
remaining curled fingers of the same hand gives the
direction of the magnetic field.
7

The Electromagnet
When a core (made up of
magnetic material like iron) is
wound by an insulating wire
nand when electric current is
passed through it the magnetic
field produced around the coil
will be induced on the core
which behaves like a magnet .
These are temporary magnets as
they will lose their magnetic
property once the electricity is
turned off. Electromagnets are
used in junkyard cranes and electric bells.

Electric bell
The switch is pressed and current flows through
the circuit. The electromagnet is powered and
generates a magnetic field that attracts the iron
strip towards it. The striker strikes the gong
(bell). When the striking arm strikes the gong,
the contact is broken and the current stops
flowing through the circuit.

Junkyard Cranes
Cranes use electromagnets to lift and move
heavy loads such as scrap metal from one
place to another. The electromagnet is
attached to the crane's arm, and when the
electric current is turned on, the magnet
becomes magnetized and can attract and lift
the load.

Personal Engagement
I have attached a video where i have explained about attraction and
repulsion of magnets .

Analysis and Conclusion

Magnetism is a fundamental force of nature that arises from the motion of

electric charges. It is closely linked to electricity, as both are
manifestations of the same force—electromagnetism. Magnets exhibit
properties such as attraction and repulsion, and their strength is influenced
by factors like material composition, temperature, and the alignment of
magnetic domains. The magnetic field produced by magnets can influence
objects and materials in its vicinity, affecting devices and technologies\
across industries.
Magnetism plays a crucial role in modern technology and nature. From
powering electric motors to enabling communication systems, magnets are
essential for countless applications. Understanding magnetism has not only
advanced scientific knowledge but also improved the design and efficiency
of many devices, making it one of the most important forces for
technological progress.
