This recollection module, “The Church Today: A Beacon of Hope and
Healing,” invites you to rediscover the beauty and mission of the
Church in today’s world. The Church is not just a building or an
institution—it is the Body of Christ, made up of people called to be
instruments of His grace and compassion. As young members of the
Church, you are invited to reflect on how you, too, can be bearers of
hope and healing, responding to the needs of others with love, service,
and faith.

Overview:
The Grade 11 recollection, themed "The Church Today: A Beacon of Hope and
Healing," aims to guide students in reflecting on the Church's role in the
modern world as a source of hope and healing. In the face of personal
struggles, societal challenges, and global uncertainties, this recollection will
explore how the Church continues to be a guiding light for individuals and
communities. Through prayers, discussions, and activities, students will
deepen their understanding of the Church's mission and their role as young
Catholics in carrying forward its message of love, compassion, and healing.
Objective:
By the end of the Grade 11 recollection, students will be able to:
 Understand the Church's mission as a source of hope and healing in
the world today.
 Reflect on the challenges and opportunities faced by the Church and its
faithful in modern society.
 Strengthen their personal faith and recognize their responsibility as
part of the Church's mission to bring healing and hope to others.
 Engage with the teachings of the Church on social justice, compassion,
and service, and how these can be applied in their daily lives.

Opening Prayer
"Heavenly Father, In this moment of gathering, we come before you with
hearts filled with gratitude and anticipation. As high school students, we
recognize the importance of community and the blessings of friendship and
learning that surround us each day.
We thank you, Lord, for the gift of this new day, brimming with possibilities
and opportunities for growth. We are grateful for the privilege of education,
for teachers who inspire us, and for classmates who challenge and support
us along our journey.
As we embark on this time together, we ask for your guiding presence to be

"Faith Journey Interview"
Objective: To foster deeper connections and understanding among
participants by sharing personal stories and experiences related to faith.
Materials Needed:
 Paper
 Pens or pencils
Instructions:
1. Introduction: Explain to the group that they will be engaging in an
activity to learn more about each other's faith journeys and
experiences.
 2. Pairing: Pair up participants into groups of two. If there is an odd
number of participants, you can form a group of three.
3. Interview: In each pair, one participant will be the interviewer, and the
other will be the interviewee. Give them a set amount of time (e.g., 5-
10 minutes) to conduct the interview.
4. Interview Questions: Provide a list of open-ended questions related to
faith and personal experiences. Encourage interviewers to ask follow-
up questions to delve deeper into the interviewee's responses. Here
are some example questions:
 Can you share a significant moment or experience that
strengthened your faith?
 How has your faith journey influenced your life choices and
decisions?
 Are there any challenges or struggles you've faced in your faith
journey? How did you overcome them?
 Who has been a source of inspiration or mentorship in your faith
journey?
 Can you share a meaningful Bible verse or story that has
impacted you?
5. Interview Sharing: After the allotted time, bring the pairs back together
as a group. Invite each participant to share one interesting or
meaningful insight they learned about their partner during the
interview.
6. Reflection: Facilitate a brief reflection discussion by asking participants
to share their thoughts and feelings about the activity. Encourage them
to reflect on what they learned from their partner's faith journey and
how it relates to their own experiences.
7. Optional: Provide additional time for participants to mingle and share
their own personal stories or insights with others in the group.
Closing: Conclude the activity by expressing gratitude for everyone's
openness and willingness to share. Encourage participants to continue
building relationships and supporting each other on their faith journeys.
II: Gospel Reading and explanation of the Theme
Cure on a Sabbath.
After this, there was a feast* of
the Jews, and Jesus went up to
Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem
at the Sheep [Gate]* a pool called in
Hebrew Bethesda, with five
porticoes. In these lay a large
number of ill, blind, lame, and
crippled. One man was there who
had been ill for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there and
knew that he had been ill for a long
time, he said to him, “Do you want
to be well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into
the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else
gets down there before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and
walk.” Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked.
Reflection:
Imagine being stuck in one place for a really long time, like being unable to
play your favorite game or go out with friends for 38 years. That's almost
forever, right? In this story from John 5:1-9, we meet a man who had been
sick and unable to walk for 38 years. He spent his days lying by a special
pool, hoping for a miracle.
But the coolest part of this story isn't just about the pool or even the man's
healing. It's about Jesus and what He shows us about God's love and power.
Here's what we can learn from this story:
1. Jesus Sees Us:
 Jesus saw the man among many others. This means that even
when we feel invisible or overlooked, Jesus sees us. He knows our
struggles and our hopes.
2. Jesus Cares About Us:
 Jesus didn't just see the man; He cared enough to ask, "Do you
want to get well?" This shows us that Jesus cares about our well-
 being. He wants to help us, not just physically, but in every part
of our lives.
3. We Need to Trust Jesus:
 When Jesus told the man to get up, the man had to trust Jesus
and believe in His power to heal him. Sometimes, we need to
trust Jesus even when things seem impossible.
4. Taking Action:
 The man had to take action. Jesus told him to pick up his mat and
walk. This teaches us that sometimes we need to take a step of
faith. If Jesus is guiding us, we can trust that He will give us the
strength to do what seems hard.
5. Jesus Brings Change:
 Jesus changes everything. The man’s life was completely
transformed in an instant. When we let Jesus into our lives, He
brings positive changes and helps us overcome our difficulties.
So, what can we do?
 Remember that Jesus sees and loves you. No matter what you're going
through, you're never alone.
 Talk to Jesus about your struggles. Just like the man by the pool, you
can tell Jesus what you're facing.
 Trust that Jesus can help you. Believe in His power and love.
 Be ready to take action. If you feel Jesus nudging you to do something,
be brave and take that step.
This story is a powerful reminder that with Jesus, nothing is impossible. He
brings hope, healing, and change, no matter how long we’ve been waiting or
struggling. So, let's trust Him and take that step of faith today!
Icebreaker Activity: "Miracle Mat Relay"
Objective: To engage Participants in a fun and interactive activity while
exploring the themes of healing and faith found in John 5:1-9.
Materials Needed:
 Mats or towels (one per participant)
 Open space for relay race
Instructions:
1. Introduction: Gather everyone in a circle and briefly explain the story
of the man healed by Jesus at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-9).
Highlight the themes of faith, healing, and trust in Jesus.
2. Formation: Divide participants into teams of 4-6 members each. Each
team should have one mat or towel.
3. Rules:
 Each team will form a line, standing behind a designated starting
line.
 The first player in each line will lie down on their mat.
 Upon the start signal, the first player must crawl to a designated
point and back while still on the mat.
 Once the first player returns, they must tag the next player in
line, who then repeats the process.
 The relay continues until all players in each team have
completed the course.
4. Discussion: After the relay race, gather everyone in a circle again and
facilitate a brief discussion:
 Ask participants how they felt during the race. Did they face any
challenges?
 Relate the relay race experience to the story of the man at the
pool. Discuss the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and
faith in overcoming challenges.
  Encourage participants to share any reflections or insights they
gained from the activity and how it relates to their faith journey.
5. Closing: Conclude the activity by emphasizing the message of hope
and healing found in Jesus Christ. Encourage participants to continue
trusting in Jesus and supporting one another in their faith journey.

Session 1: Recognizing Our Need for Healing
 Objective: Students will explore their own personal 'pools'—areas in
their lives where they need healing or growth.
 Activities: Guided meditation on John 5:1-9, personal reflection,
sharing in small groups.

condition. Just as the man lay paralyzed by the pool, we too often find
ourselves crippled by various forms of brokenness—physical ailments,

our lives.

2. The Illusion of Self-Sufficiency: Despite his desperate condition, the

invalid initially hesitated to accept Jesus's offer of healing. Similarly, we
may deceive ourselves into believing that we can manage our
brokenness on our own. We might rely on temporary solutions or
distractions to numb our pain, or we might pridefully resist
acknowledging our need for help. However, true healing begins with
recognizing our inability to save ourselves and surrendering to the
transformative power of God's grace.
 3. Confronting Excuses and Limiting Beliefs: When Jesus asked the
man if he wanted to be made well, the man responded with excuses
about why he couldn't access the healing waters. This reflects our
tendency to rationalize our circumstances or cling to limiting beliefs
that keep us trapped in cycles of brokenness. Whether it's fear, shame,
or despair, these excuses prevent us from fully embracing the
possibility of healing and change.

4. The Invitation to Faith and Obedience: Jesus's command to the

man—“Rise, take up your bed and walk”—was a call to faith and
obedience. Despite the man's doubts and limitations, he chose to trust
in Jesus's words and take a step of faith. Likewise, recognizing our need
for healing requires us to respond in faith, believing that God's power is
greater than our brokenness. It involves surrendering our doubts and
fears, and obeying God's call to rise above our circumstances and walk
in the freedom He offers.

5. Embracing the Journey of Transformation: Healing is not just a

one-time event but a journey of ongoing transformation. As the man
experienced physical healing, we too are invited to experience healing
and wholeness in every area of our lives—body, mind, and spirit. This

situation where we seek healing or change.

Introduction:
High school—the whirlwind of academic challenges, social dynamics, and

Workshop: "Circle of Encouragement"

Objective: To conclude the gathering on a positive and uplifting note,
fostering a sense of encouragement and support among participants.
Materials Needed:
None
Instructions:
1. Formation: Gather participants in a circle, either seated or standing, in a
comfortable and relaxed manner.
2. Introduction: Explain to the group that you will be engaging in a closing
activity called the "Circle of Encouragement." Emphasize that the purpose of
this activity is to uplift and support one another as you conclude your time
together.
Guidelines: Establish guidelines for the activity, such as:
1. Each participant will have the opportunity to share a word of
encouragement or affirmation with the person standing or sitting
next to them in the circle.
2. Encourage participants to be genuine and sincere in their words,
expressing appreciation, admiration, or support for one another.
3. Remind participants to actively listen and receive the words of
encouragement offered to them with gratitude.
 4. Starting the Circle: Begin the activity by having one person start
the circle. They will turn to the person next to them and offer a
word of encouragement. For example, they might say something
like, "I admire your creativity," or "You always bring a positive
energy to our gatherings."
3. Passing the Encouragement: After the first person shares their word of
encouragement, the recipient will then turn to the person next to them and
offer their own word of encouragement. Encourage participants to continue
passing the encouragement around the circle until everyone has had a
chance to share and receive.
4. Reflection: After everyone has participated in the Circle of Encouragement,
gather the group back together for a brief reflection. Invite participants to
share how they felt receiving words of encouragement from their peers and
how it impacted them.

5. Closing Remarks: Conclude the activity by thanking everyone for their

participation and for contributing to a positive and uplifting atmosphere.
Encourage participants to carry the spirit of encouragement with them
beyond the gathering, spreading positivity wherever they go.

and take them home as reminders of the support and encouragement they
