Assignment 1

Due date: 2 Feb, 2024

Please write down your name and university number. Precise and adequate explanations should be
given to each problem.

1. (4 points) Let √

⎪ −x − 1 if x < 0,

f (x) = ⎨ x2 + 1

⎪ if x ⩾ 0.

⎩ ∣x − 3∣
Find the natural domain and the corresponding range of f .

2. Let f ∶ R → R be an even function. Define g(x) = f (sin x).

(a) (1 point) Determine whether g must be an even function or not.

(b) (1 point) Determine whether g must be an odd function or not.
(c) (2 points) Show that g is a periodic function, and find the smallest positive real number
d such that d must be a period of g.

3. Solve each of the following equations in real numbers.

(a) (2 points) (3 tan x + 4) cos2 x = 2

π π
(b) (2 points) sin 2x = sin (x + ) cos (x − ) (Hint: use Q12 of tutorial 1)

4. Let P (x) = an xn + an−1 xn−1 + ⋯ + a1 x + a0 be a polynomial with real coefficients, where an ≠ 0.

Suppose z ∈ C is a solution to the equation P (x) = 0.

(a) (2 points) Show that z is also a solution to this equation.

(b) (2 points) If z is not a real number, show that P (x) has a quadratic factor with real
coefficients. (Hint: If α ∈ C is a solution to P (x) = 0, then P (x) has a linear factor x − α
by the factor theorem.)

5. In each of the following, describe the geometric meaning of the set of points in the Argand
diagram.
2
(a) (2 points) the set of all z ∈ C such that ∣z − 1 + i∣ = 2
