Computer Essential (ICDL) Class Activity 2

You may use google and your own knowledge to do the following
activity. Remember to save your work under your student drive.

1. Name the 2 main types of computers and add an image and

description next to it.

Desktop Computer – is a personal computer and often called a

PC. A PC is any general purpose computer whose size,
capabilities and price make it useful for individuals and
which is intended to be operated directly by an end-user.

Notebook – Is a lightweight, portable computer that includes a

screen, keyboard and trackpad/touchpad.

2.Name the Main devices and add an image and description next
to it.

Smartphone- is a mobile phone offering advanced computing and

connectivity. Smartphones differ from ordinary mobile phones
in two fundamental ways: how they are built and what functions
they can perform.

Media Player – is a portable electronic device, its main

feature being the capability to store, organize and play
audio, image, video and document files. Larger non-portable
devices are also available.

Digital Camera- provide a convenient way of storing video or

still photographs without the hassle of changing film or
developing photographs. Images and videos are recorded on an
electronic image sensor. Information is stored on a microchip
or memory card. This information can be transferred from the
memory card in the camera to a computer via a cable.

3.Name all the main parts of a computer. Add an image of the

main parts.

Power supply

CPU

Fan

Heat sink

Video card
Modem

Sound card

Ribbon Cable

Motherboard

CD-ROM or DVD drive

Hard drive

Power cords

Floppy drive

Zip drive

Extra case fan

4. Define the following terms:

4.1. Processor- The computer’s Central Processing Unit, or

CPU is the most important part of a computer. The CPU is often
referred to as the microprocessor or processor. Information
constantly flows back and forth between the CPU and all the
other parts of the computer. It is the control unit decision-
making, calculating and processing brain of the computer.

4.2. Random Access Memory (RAM)

- RAM is considered random access as you can access any memory

cell directly and in any order. It is the main working memory
of the computer or device.

4.3. Read Only Memory (ROM)

- ROM is an integrated circuit, programmed with a specific,

permanent set of instructions and data when it is
manufactured.

4.4. Cache Memory

- is a Random Access Memory that a computer processor can

access more quickly than it can access regular RAM.

4.5. Storage
- Data storage is a technology consisting of components and
recording media used to retain digital data.

5. A Printer is an output device that produces paper copies

(hard copies) of the documents or data that can be viewed on a
computer screen. All printers have certain specifications.
5.1. Look at the list below and describe what each of the
functions mean.

Speed The number of characters

printed per second or the
number of pages per minute.

Paper handling The maximum with of paper

that can be used.

Pitch The number of characters per

inch that can be printed
horizontally.

Print quality Measured in dots per inch.

Columns The number of characters that

can be printed horizontally
across the page.

Printer elements These determine the various

types of fonts that can be
used and the graphic
capabilities.

Connection to Computer/ This can be a serial or

Interface parallel with older printers
and USB or wireless with more
recent printers.

5.2. Name the different Types of Printers and also add an

image and description next to it.

Impact Printers – have a carbon ribbon and characters are

hammered on the paper through the ribbon, similar to a
typewriter. They make physical contact with the paper. Impact
printers are noisy when printing. These printers have many
moving parts and are prone to mechanical problems.

Non – Impact Printers

- These printers do not make physical contact with the paper.
Thermal and Laser printers use heat sensitive or electro –
statically charged paper to create a printed character. They
are also less noisy.

6. A computer screen is the most used computer output device.

Name the different types of screens you get, add an image and
description next to it.

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Screens – are heavy, use a lot of desk
space and electricity. It is the oldest technology used by
screens and is based on the cathode ray tube technology that
was developed for television.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Screens

LCD screens are often called a flat – panel display or flat

screen and use liquid crystals to display images on the
screen. It is the newer technology CRT screens

Light – Emitting Diode (LED) Screens

LED screens are in reality an improved version of the LCD

screen. The backlighting improves picture quality
substantially and light shed by LEDs offers superior picture
quality compared to LCD’s.
