❖Summary
Introduction to aviation .
➢ The term aviation was coined by a French pioneer
named Joseph Gabriel de La Landelle in 1863.
➢ It originates from the Latin word avis that literally
means bird. Aviation means all the activities related
to flying the aircraft.
➢ Aviation industry is the business sector that
manufactures, maintains, and operates the aircrafts
and the airports.
➢ .
Aviation is primarily classified into two main types:
Aviation

What is civil aviation ?

➢ The term civil aviation refers to the operation

of any civil aircraft and related activities for the
purpose of transportation by air.
➢ In other words, civil aviation covers all aviation
activities except military operations.
➢ When it comes to aviation, there is a broad
range of responsibilities within. It comprises
activities at the airport as well as in the aircraft.
➢ It involves ground duties that are required to
perform before the flight takes off, the
activities during the flight, and the activities
after it lands.
A Brief concept of civil Aviation

• Civil aviation has unique characteristics compared with other industries: it is not
only wide-ranging but also an instrumental force of globalization.

Contains all ways and means,

•-which will move

•-people, goods or mail (post)

•-from an origin to a new destination

•-and all directly related services.

Importance of Civil Aviation
❖ Civil aviation is a key part of today’s world, playing an important role in
everyday life and the global economy.
❖ Civil aviation connects people from different parts of the world, making
travel more accessible than ever.
❖ Additionally, It generates millions of jobs, not only within airlines but also
in related sectors such as airport operations, maintenance, tourism, and
logistics.
❖ Aviation is a driving force behind the global tourism industry. It allows
millions of travelers to explore new destinations each year, creating revenue
for local economies and encouraging investment in infrastructure.
❖ Civil aviation is essential in times of crisis, providing rapid response
capabilities for emergency relief and humanitarian aid
Route structures in aviation

• An aviation’s route structure refers to its

network of flight routes connecting various
cities and airports. This includes

1. Hub and Spoke Network in Aviation

2. Point-to-Point Flight Operations

3. Linear Route Structures in Air Travel

Route Structure P2P
❖ The point-to-point system is the simplest means to connect the cities
an airline chooses to serve. Each origin and destination city, or city-
pair, is served by non-stop flights.
❖ Non-stop flights in a point-to-point system provide the shortest total
travel time from origin to destination.
❖ Direct routes minimize travel time and reduce operational
complexity, enhancing overall efficiency.
❖ Examples include Southwest Airlines (U.S.), Ryanair (Europe), and
AirAsia (Asia-Pacific), JetBlue Airways (United States), Indigo (India),
WestJet (Canada) and e.t.c…
Route Structure Hub-and-Spoke.
❖ The H&S route system is employed by most of the largest airlines worldwide.
❖It is much more complex to design and operate than the point-to-point and linear systems.
❖ Passengers departing from any spoke city (starting point of the travel) . the network are first
flown in the aircraft is called(hub) airport, where they transfer to a second flight to their
final point of the travel is called (destination)
❖ Hub airports typically have extensive facilities for passenger transfers, maintenance, and
cargo handling.
❖ Examples include Atlanta (Delta Air Lines), Chicago O'Hare (United Airlines),
and Dubai (Emirates).
❖ Early airline route structures were mostly linear, going from one city
to the next and on to the next……………………………….

•Civil aviation encompasses all non-military flying activities and related services for
transportation.
•Route Structures : Point-to-Point: Direct flights between cities, enhancing efficiency (e.g.,
Southwest Airlines, Ryanair).
•Hub-and-Spoke: Passengers travel to a central hub before reaching their destination (e.g.,
Atlanta, Dubai).
•Linear Early airline route structures were mostly linear, going from one city
•to the next and on to the next……………………………….
•Importance of Civil Aviation
•Global Connectivity: Facilitates travel and trade, promoting economic growth.
•Safety and Regulation : Ensured by organizations like ICAO to maintain standards and
enhance safety.
