Add BackTrack
Add BackTrack
BackTrack is an Ubuntu based Linux live DVD for digital forensics and penetration
(sic) testing. It includes many well known security and reverse engineering tools,
e.g. Aircrack, Ophcrack, Gerix Wifi Cracker, disassemblers, sniffers, etc., as well as
commonplace applications such as browsers, file managers, editors, torrent clients,
etc. It is extremely useful to have and I always include it in my personal HBCD
on a USB. Both the Restored HBCD and BackTrack have grown in size and it is
not anymore possible to fit them both in a regular DVD. Unless you go for a dual
layer DVD the only option now is a USB flash drive. Instructions for putting the
Restored HBCD in a bootable USB, are provided in a separate document included
in the upload. Due to its size, do not include BackTrack in this upload. However
it is very easy to download integrate it to a USB or DVD. Just follow the simple
instructions that follow.
• Open the BackTrack iso image with 7z, WinRar, Winmount (all are found in
HBCD’s Program Launcher), or any utility that can explore and extract files
from iso images.
• Extract from the iso image the complete directories (folders) /casper and
/preseed. The rest of the BackTrack iso image is not needed.
• Copy the extracted folders to the root directory of your already prepared
HBCD USB. For how to prepare a bootable USB read separate instruction
sheet. If you are rebuilding the HBCD DVD, open the iso image with an iso
editor such as IsoMaster or UltraISO and add the directories there.
• Test the USB/DVD for booting. Backtrack is already included in the boot
menu. It is found under ‘Linux’.
To start the graphical environment type ‘‘startx’’ on the command prompt. Fi-
nally, when booting BackTrack from USB on some machines loading stops with
the error message: ‘‘Provide a name for Disk’’. If you see this message press
ALT-F1 and then type something (e.g. disk) and then ENTER. Booting then will
continue normally.
