Math Assignment Unit 1

Mathematics Assignment: Functions, Domain and Range, Rate of Change, and Extrema

Task 1: Interpretation of Graph

(i) Identify the domain and range.

The domain of a function represents all possible input values (x-values), while the range
represents all possible output values (y-values). Based on the given graph:

 The domain includes all x-values from [X_min, X_max].

 The range includes all y-values from [Y_min, Y_max].

(ii) Does this graph represent a function and a one-one function? Why/Why not?

A graph represents a function if each x-value corresponds to exactly one y-value (i.e., it passes
the vertical line test). If the function is one-to-one, it must also pass the horizontal line test,
meaning each y-value has a unique x-value. The explanation should be based on the graph.

Task 2: Avocado Export Function

Given:

(i) Graphing E(P)

Using GeoGebra, the function is plotted, where:

 X-axis represents production (P) in thousands.

 Y-axis represents export (E) in thousands.

(ii) Is E(P) a function of P?

Yes, because for each production value P, there is a unique export value E(P), satisfying the
definition of a function.

(iii) Domain and Range

 Domain: (Production starts at 10,000 thousand avocados)

 Range: (Export starts from 0 upwards)

(iv) Export for 70,000 and 20,000 production

(v) Dependent and Independent Variables

 Independent Variable: P (Production)

 Dependent Variable: E(P) (Export, as it depends on P)

Task 3: Rate of Change in Length vs. Weight

(i) Rate of Change at Intersection

The rate of change (slope) is given by: Where is the change in weight and is the change in
length. By calculating slopes for both functions at the intersection, a conclusion is drawn
regarding how weight changes with respect to length.

(ii) Slopes of CD and EF

For each set of points (C, D) and (E, F), the slopes are calculated. The comparison provides
insights into which animal experiences a steeper increase in weight per unit length.

Task 4: Local Extrema Analysis

 Local Maximum: Highest points in a certain interval.

 Local Minimum: Lowest points in a certain interval.

 Difference from Absolute Extrema: Absolute extrema are the highest/lowest values over
the entire domain.

Intervals for extrema (e.g., ) are identified, and increasing/decreasing trends are discussed.

Task 5: Taxation System in Country W

(i) Piecewise Function Representation

(ii) Example Calculations

For an income of 3000:

For an income of 10,000:

This process is repeated for different income levels.

Conclusion

This assignment covers fundamental concepts of functions, domain, range, rate of change, and
extrema, providing insights into mathematical modeling in real-world applications.
